Stricture formation urethra

Hi, I'm 49 diagnosed with PC few months ago 3 + 4. I have a choice of surgery or HIFU.

I was leaning towards the HIFU route but the consultant has highlighted a higher risk of stricture formation urethra up from 1-2 % to 5 - 10% due to the apical location of the lesion.

Has anyone had this issue before is it worth the risk or should I just go opt the surgery route which has a lower chance of getting a stricture formation.

Any help much appreciated.

Asif, I suspect my stricture, which was caused by trauma and scar tissue maybe different to a stricture caused by HIFU. My type of stricture can take a few goes to sort out.

I am sure the HIFU guys can help with your question.

Thanks Chris

Asif

I developed a stricture about a year post RARP. Eventually had a dilation and now self catherterise every three days. It is getting gradually more difficult to pass them and I expect to need another dilation at some time.

Good luck

Cheers

You can also get a stricture after RT. At one time one of the cons of HIFU was getting a Fistula but the incidence of this has been greatly reduced - my HIFU specialist has been reported as not having had one in over the 900 times she has administered this procedure. There are pros and cons to every form of treatment and side effects can differ in type and severity. Clearly any treatment carried out by highly experienced practitioners stands a better chance of minimising poor outcomes but some men are better candidates for a particular treatment than another. In general, I would tend to be guided by my Consultant but as regards HIFU, a second opinion from a top HIFU specialist might be worth obtaining in view of the tumour location which might well be a factor that increases risk.

Asif, I formed a stricture at the joint of the urethra and bladder as a result of surgery.

Thanks Chris

Chris, thanks for the reply, once the stricture is treated is that the end of the problem or is it something you have to manage long term?

Thanks Asif
