Bowel / Bladder spasms

Morning all,

I am nearly 3 weeks post RALP still getting up 3-4 times a night for a pee which is not a problem as I think my body is still in the old routine. The problem I am having is sometimes after peeing I start to get a spasm in either my bowel or bladder the pain can last for about 5 mins then subsides , also my bowel habits have changed I now have a stomach ache or spasm then usually have to go to the toilet when the pain has gone

Anybody else had anything similar?

This might not be right but could it be that you're drinking too late at night.  I tend to stop before 8pm most nights and ensure I empty before going to bed.   Also you will be wearing a pad all the time that should absorb some, it's surprising you're needing to go 3 times a night.

As for the spasms I recall it happening a few times to my bladder.  Not many though and not the bowel. I think I'd look at my diet and the time of eating. You might need advice on that.  I'd see if that has any effect although as said above you could ring a specialist nurse at the hospital or even at PCUK.

Normally things settle after a month or two although pads may be needed for 6 months. All the best Peter

Thanks both for replying, I have cut my drinks out after 8pm also have gone to decaf tea and coffee. I'm ok until I get woken needing a pee my flow is still quite weak also still get stinging when peeing, near the end of my pee the stinging gets stronger and by the time I get back in bed the spasms start which have me doubled over .

I have been in remission for ulcerative colitis for over 10 years, had a colonoscopy in July and was given the all clear

When you have RP, thousands of nerve endings are cut, burnt and bruised. s they heal, they send all sorts of confused messages to the brain which the brain struggles to interpret. A spasm affecting the bladder or bowel sounds like a pelvic floor spasm - and that has been cut and slashed particularly ruthlessly. It should calm down over the next few weeks.

Hi thanks Lyn,

I am probably being a bit impatient and expecting everything to be fixed and repaired straight away today is my 1st day without any spasms so fingers crossed that's another hurdle over with

Well the spasms came back with a vengeance everytime I peed I was in agony phoned 111 they said to go to A&E eventually got seen after 10hrs and they said I had a UTI  which never crossed my mind I also said my bladders not emptying properly, a bladder scan  read 381 which the doctor said was not enough to be recatheterized so sent home !!!

I struggled on for another day antibiotics were working as spasms had gone but now not peeing so back to a&e this time sat in corridor for 18hrs waiting for a bed as I was diagnosed with retention and my kidneys have taken quite a hit, so kept In to be monitored. Got the catheter back in for 2 weeks and being monitored a bit closer. Hopefully all will settle down now and I think I need to be a bit more vocal if I think things aren't right!!!
