Lansoprazole

Hello,

My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer 2 and a half years ago. Back in June they picked up a slight spread to a nearby lymph node so recommended a course of chemo. Unfortunately after round 2 he collapsed and was rushed to a&e where it transpired chemo had worsening an irregular heartbeat he had. That’s looks to be all under control now but his oncologist wants to take a break from the chemo for a few months to be sure.

In the meantime, he’s been told to continue with the hormone therapy and has been prescribed dexamethasone again which he took before , and something called lansoprazole which is a new one. I can’t find out much information about that drug and prostate cancer, does anyone have any experience with it?

thanks

Its for indigestion, or to be more precise it is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), which means that it reduces the production of stomach acid. I believe it is one of the five most common prescription medicines in the UK.

I have a bit of a problem with acid reflux, but it is not usually too bad. If I take Viagra, it becomes a big problem (muscles at top of stomach are same type as - well you'll have to guess). So if I take Viagra I also take a PPI.

So I doubt your dad has been prescribed it for cancer as such, but the chemo or some other drug may be giving him acid reflux so this is for controlling it.

The dexamethasone is a form of steroid so can have some nasty side effects, the lansoprazole protects his stomach from the dexa. It doesn't treat the cancer.

Hi,

I take lansoprazole to reduce effects of gastric reflux or reduce issues relating to stomach ulcers, or if I have to take ibuprofen or other NSAIDs pain killers.
