Nerve bundle removal and ED

I had a radical robotic prostatectomy on the 22ndSeptember, and despite a positive prognosis pre op, my consultant had to remove one of my nerve bundles.

I was prescribed Tadalafil twice a week after my catheter was removed, and having researched it now, I kind of understand what it does and why it was prescribed.

I am 53, happily married, and had a very active sex life so the news re the nerve bundle really knocked me for six.

I have not lost my libido at all, and have reached orgasm a number times since the op, but cannot reach a full erection – probably around 50% - so penetrative sex is not feasible.

Although weirdly, I have woken up in the early hours of the morning five or six times with a full erection.

I have an appointment at the NHS men’s health clinic in January, so I imagine more options/future plans will be discussed then.

I’d like some help/advice/input please.

Is three months too soon to be stressing? Has anyone else experienced these “morning stiffies”? Has anyone who had a nerve bundle removed ever gone on to have full sex with just tadalafil/Viagra?

Many thanks

Sam , if you are waking up with full erections this early you are doing very well. You sometimes hear that recovery can take a couple of years.

You can have vaginal intercourse with a 50 percent swelling, look up flaccid insertion, the technique does take a bit  practice.

Hope your recovery continues.

Thanks Chris

Hi there- I am 65, had a radical prostatectomy 4.5 years ago. Same as you lost a lot of nerves. Cialis was prescribed early on. Whilst a common phase everyone is different it took me 18 months of diligent work to achieve a 70% erection. I still take ciallis. It’s hard work and sometimes depressing but I have come out the other end with lots of zero psa’s and a very healthy sex life. During this journey I had to remind myself that a 50% ‘stiffy’ is better than none and many men are facing much bigger issues with this cancer than me. Good luck and keep at it - if you don’t use it you loose it!!!

Interested that you chaps have been prescribed Cialis or Tadalafil. Because I was told by my surgeon two weeks ago that they have stopped prescribing it. My GP would only supply a very limited amount of Viagra derivative as well - 8x 20mg. I bought my own vacuum pump since its a 24 week wait from operation to sexual health clinic.

Btw I had full nerve sparing and cannot get an involuntary erection, or any erection for that matter. So IMHO you are in a good place with only partial nerve sparing. Worse still I have a positive margin which would have not existed if the surgeon had removed the nerve bundle on the left..

I was supposedly non nerve sparring but still had positive margins.

Thanks Chris
