Prostatectomy at Birmingham Heartlands

I'm considering a prostatectomy operation which would take place at my local Birmingham NHS Heartlands Hospital.

I am having a consultation about it in Jan 2023 and would be interested in any help or personal experiences information from anyone on this forum.

If possible, any advice on a particular specialists recommended would be very useful as I would prefer a surgeon with good experience and track record in performing this surgery through NHS.

Where could I research specialists in my area?

Thanks Grampy

The board rules prohibit naming medical staff, but the BAUS website lists the success rate of surgeons. I'm sure that any urological consultant employed by a major healthcare trust will do a good job. You will, generally speaking, not get a choice of surgeon with the NHS; even if you are nominally under the care of a particular consultant, there's no guarantee that he or she will personally carry out your surgery.

Best wishes,

Chris

Hi Chris, many thanks for your response.

I completely understand not wanting to name names and I've looked on the BAUS website but can't seem to find the "lists the success rate of surgeons" that you referred to.

Any further assistance is appreciated.

If you use this link you can search for a surgeon:

https://www.baus.org.uk/patients/surgeons

Clicking on their name will show links to their outcome data.

Best wishes,

Chris

I am also from the West Midlands but moved to France when I retired. Things work differently here, you choose your hospital and the social security system pays for it.

I was diagnosed in February last year and had robotic surgery carried out in Oct at a large University Teaching Hospital which carries out this procedure routinely. I can report it all went incredibly well. Hospital 9am Monday, op at 12, back in my room for 4, breakfast on Tuesday and told I could shower and go home. Back home for lunch, no pain or problems. Catheter out a week later with only minor incontinence which cleared over the following two months. So I think choosing a hospital/surgeon with a lot of experience pays dividends.

Good luck, I made too big a worry of it.

Hi Tony, thanks for your response to my post.

I'd be interested in knowing what your exact situation was with regard to what your PSA, Gleason scores and scans showed, had the cancer started to come through the prostate capsule etc as mine had?

I will completely understand if you prefer not to provide this information.

My PSA was 39, Gleason 4+3 and T3 staging, no sign of lymph node or bone spread.

I had my first face to face in nearly 5 months yesterday with a surgeon and am considering which treatments I go for.

Yes a big decision to make and only I can make it!

Thanks again.
