Inguinal Hernia Nuisance

Apologies, not directly to do with PCs but I remember a few comments on here about hernias.

I have an inguinal hernia to right groin area, referred for surgery June 2022, know it's a non urgent thing and will be a while before it's sorted. Normally it's no bother, hernia may 'drop down'  can be a bit of discomfort, easy to push back etc. Sometimes though, more often recently, the hernia seems to go sideways, to the right&sort of gets stuck. Then it causes a fair bit of abdominal pain, like bad indigestion, painful when standing but fine when sitting/lying down. Quite difficult&bit painful to push back to where it belongs. I've tried a support belt in various positions but none seem to prevent it happening.

Anyone had this and can offer any suggestions please?

Peter

As per original post, I had the surgery to repair the inguinal hernia in Sept 2023 or thereabouts. The consultant I'd seen didnt mention leaving it in my case anyway tho given the choice I'd have chose surgery as it was causing me a few problems now and then, stopping me doing things. When it was causing me problems it was pretty painful and sort of felt like bad indigestion as well, causing hot sweats. The surgery sorted it out for me, you can tell somethings been done in that area and must admit to a bit of 'tenderness'. Obviously a lot of bruising occurs afterwards and my right testicle was really sore/swollen for 8 weeks, but reading about discomfort etc after op effects seemed to fade exactly as predicted.

Haven't a clue whether cancer treatment had anything to do with it for me, I doubt it. My treatment was RT and Zoladex. It has been suggested that any surgery to abdominal area can lead to hernias, I guess more likely abdominal hernias?

Yes, my abdominal hernia, which is due for repair in two weeks time (hooray!) was most likely the result of poor internal stitching when I had my prostate out 18 months ago, according to the hernia surgeon who examined me. He reckoned incisional hernias are a not uncommon side effect.

Going to visit this again as I am in the club,

Had surgery in 2019 and afterwards has a small hernia and it was okay. Saw a consultant and he suggested best to leave it alone.

Move onto late 2024 and it's grown substantially, cricket ball size. Saw another consultant, who was just numbers, 90% are left alone it was up to me. I had just been informed my cancer had definitely spread to a rib and would be starting hormone treatment, which I did early Dec 24.

Last couple of days I have been experiencing real pain and cramps in my pelvis, with associated gas movements in my bowls, without actually farting. Farting does come as a form of relief.

I don't thing this is surgery based, it could be, more related to the hernia. I did a search of hernia on this forum and came up with three hits, one had a bit of chat about it being related to surgery, others not so clear.

I would like to know if anyone on this forum has had an Inguinal Hernia and had the surgery how it went. Would you recommend or if you wouldn't and if so why,

Thank you for reading and good luck and I hope things are looking up for you.

Good luck with this. I hope it goes well.

Will be interested to hear how it goes.

How long did you have to wait once you had made the decision to go for it.

Cheers

Thanks. The hernia first became apparent about 4 months ago, I suspect as a result of too much heavy lifting during some building works we were doing last summer. Officially diagnosed via an ultrasound scan in December, met consultant early January and agreed it needed surgery. I was given a date for the op at the end of January, with a 6 week wait.

I read your post with interest. I think I might have an inguinal hernia, because of constant discomfort and aches in my right groin area. So far I have been seen by a GP, who thought I was O.K., and some weeks later I saw a private consultant who thought I might have a very small hernia and suggested I have a scan of some kind.

I have Gleason 4+3 PC, grade T3b, the oncologist told me I would be starting RP sometime in April followed by Brachytherapy. I am on Zoladex HT which will continue for 2 years.

I have put off having a scan to check for a hernia because of the impending cancer treatment. I have been procrastinating over this decision. Because of my age, (75), I don't know what I will be like after the PC treatment, older men are more likely to suffer side effects. A news item yesterday about King Charles bought this to my attention.

Update as requested. Surgery was a week ago and I was back home the same day. Felt quite sore for the first couple of days but paracetamol and ibuprofen did the trick. All soreness has now gone, wound is healing well, and the only problem is rather low energy levels. I'm not meant to lift anything for a few weeks, so Mrs Aoxomoxoa is having to do the bins for a change! Result!
