Prostate Biopsy results

Hi

I had a biopsy last week following an mri scan. I had an appointment booked at the hospital to discuss the results on 28th March. Had a call today to bring the appointment forward 20th March but its now a telephone appointment. Is it more likely to be a negative result now that it's being given by phone? I'm a bit stressed out to be honest!

Naturally you are anxious to know how you stand but I wouldn't read much into this as there could be a number of reasons why this has been changed, one of them being that changed hospital load has enabled them to discuss your case earlier. Unfortunately, there are often long waits for diagnostic results and also sometimes for treatment where this is recommended, particularly where surgery is a likely option.

Thanks Barry, my mind is working overtime at the moment, I'll try not to jump to conclusions

Not necessarily Colin, I got my results of the biopsy over the phone.

I then got all the paperwork relating to the treatment options open to me & a meeting with the consultant a few weeks later to talk over the preferred treatment I would like to have.

I know the waiting is an anxious time but the news you receive could still be good news so try not to worry too much.

All the best Jeff.

Thanks Jeff. I appreciate that. It's good to talk to people who have been through the process!

So I have now been diagnosed prostate cancer, gleeson 7 (3+4) T2.

It's taken me a few days to get my head round it but I'm glad it's been caught early. Based on what the specialist nurse told me when she gave me the results, it would seem that they will be recommending surgery. I think this would be my preference too.

I have a meeting with the surgeon on Friday to discuss the results and options moving forward.

The only thing I've noticed since on my biopsy report was that it mentions Perineural invasion. Should I be worried about this?

PNI may increase the risk of recurrence - there's no consensus on this. Its presence does unfortunately mean that surgery is unlikely to be nerve-sparing.

Best wishes,

The cancer has been seen tracking along nerve sheaths inside the prostate. This does provide a possible route for microscopic cancer to have tracked outside the prostate in the nerve sheaths. This risk is usually ignored in treatment decisions, but it might slightly increase your chance of needing salvage radiotherapy later.

Really? The PNI is not the erection nerves, it's the nerves inside the prostate.

I would in any case ask what the chance of nerve sparing surgery is. I did, and it was close to zero for me, which was one reason I went the radiotherapy route.

Thanks Andy for clearing that up! I'll discuss with surgeon on Friday.

Thanks Colin
