User

Hello,

Just wondering how long people are generally waiting for RP surgery after joining the waiting list ?

I realise it's very dependent on area - We are Portsmouth area.

Thank you

Vicky

Similar area to you so I expect the Royal Surrey will also be where they send your bloke from Pompey - time between deciding RP and surgery around a month - made the call end of July, job done end August

Usually surgery should be soon after a pre op otherwise the pre op will have to be done again. Hospitals have different time but usually 1-3 weeks.

My pre-op appointment was within a week or so of the operation so hopefully you won't have to wait too long. I'm similar area to you Vicky

Vicky, I would call the department and ask - it would be poor practice to give you an appointment for pre-op without a) telling you it is a pre-op assessment and b) informing you of the op date first.

I may be too cynical but my worry is that you might get there and discover it is either be a routine appointment or a booking error.

My pre op appointments were in a named ward , a different location to a normal urology department appointment. Are there any details on the letter. As advised a quick phone call is worth making.

Thanks Chris

Hi Vicky, I'm relatively close to you and had my surgery within 6 weeks of meeting the RP consultant/surgeon. They actually offered me an earlier appointment which I couldn't make. I had surgery towards the end of Nov '22.

Thank you, that's good to hear. We are over 3 weeks on from appointment with consultant but not had any communication yet. Sounds like we should hear something soon 🤞

Thanks again

Vicky

Quick update for those in our area - Fareham/ Portsmouth

Saw consultant 6th April. Letter today,  19th May, for outpatient appt on 5th June. We are guessing this is a preop appointment but no information in the letter 😕

No idea how long after that the op will be, hopefully not too long 🤞

Thank you Lyn, I have to say we were a bit confused  - it's just a date and time for an outpatient appointment. We will ring on Monday to check it out 😊

Hello all 😊

So OH telephoned urology this morning. The mystery outpatient on 5th June isn't a preoperative appointment. OH has been assigned a new consultant who wants to see him before proceeding.

Taking a glass half full outlook, it feels right that the new consultant wants to ensure treatment is right 😊

Taking a glass half empty outlook, it feels like we have rewound 2 months, back to the last time we met a consultant and decided on treatment 😕

So onwards we go.... we will try to remain glass half full people 😊😊😊

Hi all,

Quick update for those in our area - Fareham / Portsmouth.  OH has appointment for op at end of June. So currently a 12 week wait from consultant appointment.

Hope the information is useful to others waiting

I had my biopsy results yesterday at Alexandra Hospital, Redditch, West Midlands and was told 2 weeks for a call from specialist nurse then 4-6 weeks for a meeting with oncologist then another 4-6 weeks for a meeting with a surgeon and THEN 6-8 months to wait for robotic and around 8-10 months wait for open surgery!

Seeing the replies from those in different parts of the country, I very much hope that I either misunderstood something or perhaps the information I was given was maybe not entirely accurate. The medical team are advising me to go onto AS (Gleason 6, grade 1, age 55). Maybe I would be low priority for the waiting list.

Jonathan, if they put you down as on AS, they avoid the target of a) seeing the consultant within 31 days of diagnosis and b) treatment commencing within 62 days of you confirming your preferred treatment. It may be that your hospital is nowhere near meeting the national targets and has given up trying?

However, I see from your other post that you only had one positive core and the MDT recommended AS. On that basis, surgery or radiotherapy seem rather like taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut so the long waits being quoted to you are probably because you would be asking for radical treatment against the advice given to you

Many thanks for your comments.

I have checked on the NHS web site and the average waiting time for surgery at the Redditch hospital is stated as 26 weeks.

This particular thread started about the issues of timescales so I will pick up on on your other point elsewhere. things are not as straight forward as the proverbial sledgehammer and nut, though I suspect you are correct when you say that might be the thinking behind the medical team’s preference for AS for me.
