Something else to think about

Good afternoon all. I was diagnosed in November. Gleason 3-4 T2 PSA of 9. Been on A/S since whilst seeing all relevant specialists regarding treatments. Had a meeting with Oncologist on Monday to discuss LDR Brachytherapy. He said I'd be suitable but would need 3 months of HT prior to treatment ( likewise EBRT) as my prostate is 54cc. He mentioned tablets and injections. My question is, what would the exact treatment be  and if anyone has had 3 months of HT prior to treatment, what side affects would I be most likely to experience. Regards

If the hormone therapy is just to reduce prostate size, they usually use Bicalutamide tablets. Some places will do LDR with a max prostate size of 55cc, yours presumably won't, but they probably don't need to shrink it much to get within their range.

If you are on just Bicalutamide tablets, I would also ask for Tamoxifen, to prevent breast gland growth and nipple sensitivity which Bicalutamide can cause if on it 2 or more months, although they might not think it worth it for just 3 months.

The other option would be hormone therapy injections which are every 12 weeks or 3 months (depending on brand). You would possibly only have one injection. The injections have to be started approx half way through a single 28 day course of Bicalutamide tablets. Tamoxifen unlikely to be needed in this case.
