Mid diagnosis and confused

My PSA is 21. I have been told I am stage T3a. I had a biopsy on Tuesday, and I have just come back from a bone scan. After it, I was asked to go for X-Rays of my back. I am guessing this is not good news. I see the consultant in 10 days for the results, but the request for X-Rays after the bone scan has spooked me.

Anyone any experience of this?

Hi Tony,

My PSA  was 36 at diagnosis and went through all these tests…I think they are normal to check whether there is any spread. In my case there wasn’t any except for Seminal Vesicle. I can understand how you feel, as everyone says, the waiting is the worst part. Just be kind to yourself and keep busy and active until your appointment and deal with it then. If you’re struggling talk to someone, there is help out there…you can phone the Specialist nurses on PCUK or maybe you could speak to your own CNS.

all the best for your results and try not to panic, there are so many treatment options available.

Thank you, Decho. That’s a great response. Just what I needed this morning. Have a great day.

A nuclear bone scan isn't detecting mets directly, it's detecting healing bone. If a bone scan comes back with many spots, then that would be considered cancer. However, if it's just one or two spots, the bone might be simply healing after mechanical damage. Vertebrae can break with age, and sometimes this is without even any significant pain. A nuclear bone scan is a very low resolution image which cannot even show if a vertebra fracture is slightly displaced, so the X-ray will be to look in detail.

Wishing you the best for a good result.
