Urinary symptoms after external radiotherapy and brachytherapy

My husband has locally advanced PC ie its contained in the prostate. He’s on hormone treatment and had brachytherapy in September followed by 15 external RT sessions.

The treatment ended in mid October. For the last month he’s had pain on peeing and is up up to 8 times in the night. That’s the most but the best is 4 or 5. It’s really getting him down and he’s been checked for UTI which he’s not got.

That together with the effects of the HT are taking their toll. He’s grateful to have been treated but any suggestions for these effects would be greatly welcomed

Hi,I had low dose Brachytherpy in 2016 and the first few months can be difficult and getting up many times a night is normal ,but i don't remember pain passing water.I was on Tamulosen tablets prescribed by the doctor and that helped a lot and i stopped taking them about three months later.

Maybe your specialist can help but you are still early days from treatment.I am 7 years on from Brachytherpy and have been signed off and pleased with the results and the low psa .If i can help any further please ask.

Ps i still get up twice a night but that is normal for me at 77.

John.

I didn't have too many symptoms post brachy+ ebrt. I kept a pee bottle by the bed, it just meant it wasn't quite so disturbing having to put lights on walk to toilet etc.

Hi Banana Loaf

i had 39 sessions of Radiotherapy completed in March and suffered from painful peeing - if he not already get your husband on Tamsulosin which really helped me - I’m not on them now but recently been diagnosed with Radiation Proctitis which is not nice but awaiting some form of treatment

Did the GP send off a urine sample to the hospital for proper testing or did he just do a dipstick test in the surgery? Some UTIs are notoriously difficult to diagnose and do not show up on a dipstick.

The other possibility is radiation cystitis. Has he tried cutting all caffeine out of his diet? Have you tried cranberry juice - it needs to be pure juice and not the cheaper 'from concentrate' stuff. At this time of year, it is probably cheaper to buy fresh cranberries and whizz them at home in a blender / juicer?

Thanks everyone for your replies which are helpful. He is on Tamulosin which he was given before the brachytherapy. Also GP has sent off a urine sample for testing so we’ll see what that shows. Your support is much appreciated
