Hi had a psa test last week came back as a score of 20, my gp has referred me on to the local hospital for more urgent checks.I already have an enlarged prostate with the usual symptoms.

what I’d like to know has anyone had a psa score of 20 or above without having prostate cancer ?

iam preparing for a confirmation of cancer

thanks

Hello,

It could be hyperplasy or an infection. PSA can raise for many reasons at that level, not connected necessarily to cancer.

Good luck with the results of the exams

my husband had PSA 20.15 and pirads 5

biopsy found low grade cancer, his PSA steadily dropped the last being  under the referral number. The oncologist believes he had asymptomatic prostatitis that lead to raised PSA. So, although he did have cancer ( had he had PSA test six weeks later he’s not have known) high PSA isn’t necessarily cancer.

I hope this gives you some hope.

A PSA of 20 is 'likely' to mean that you have PCa but is not a guarantee that you do.

Wait until you get the full test results - the good news is that it is a very treatable and curable disease and there is plenty of support on these pages as we are all walking the same path.

Apparently we have had a PSA on this forum of 80 and it wasn't cancer, that would be very rare though.

Having prostate cancer is normal for men over about 60. The important thing is to find out if it is serious or a pussy cat.

This is true - we have had a few around the 70/80 mark who went on to get the all clear and we once had a man with a PSA reading around 100 who also came up clear in his biopsies. There was a piece of research published last year on the Gov.uk website where the average reading for BPH was between 20 - 36 and the highest benign reading was for a man with no cancer but severe prostatitis - it was 1,300. So while you should go and see the specialists and have all the diagnostic tests, try not to panic.
