Diagnosed finally today

So that day finally arrived. Lucky for me, I had the best of outcomes. T2 3+4. I was expecting worse to be honest. Offered two options and thanks to this site and others experiences here, I opted for RP. I will be operated on at the end of March. Enough time to go skiing on one side, and get married in June on the other side. Luckily, I am marrying a girl who fully understands the possible outcomes and is willing to embark upon my journey. Feel a lot more positive about the future.

You are a very lucky man in many ways - the diagnosis and secondly having someone who understands and accepts it at such an important point in your lives together.

Wishing you all the best!

Happy for your both lucks.

Your 2nd luck (that is finding a loyal partner) somehow overrules your diagnoses.

Enjoy your wedding

Best wishes

Well Andre, finding yourself here is VERY bad luck, but obviously your luck has changed. Great that you’re going for RP and also that you’ve obviously got a fiancé who is a real ‘keeper’.

Good Luck to both of you on both your journeys…..and I long for the day that my joints are strong enough after HT to get skiing to Colorado. Where are you off skiing to? make me jealous🤣🤣🤣

I was diagnosed back in January with same results as you 3+4, T2 CPG2, I’m 66.

I was offered all possible options and I decided on Active surveillance, my thinking behind it was why have the surgery now if I don’t really need it yet if at all!

I’ve been attending a local support group for a few months previously, so had spoken to quite a few others there & many were on AS with a higher score than me & some had been on AS for 8/10 years, also a specialist prostate cancer nurse from the hospital attends every meeting and I spoke to her also & she also said if it’s a lower score & contained inside prostate it’ll be slow growing, so AS is a good choice.

My biopsies were 28 taken & only 4 showed cancer.  I understand that having been diagnosed with prostate cancer the immediate reaction is to get it out, but having done lots of research on it and all the options & side effects involved, I’m happy with my choice.

You should read the results of the “ProtecT trial” which is very interesting.

Hi Derek. Thank you for your reply. To be honest, the diagnosis is still sinking in and the treatment ahead fills me with dread. I am hoping that focusing on positive future events will help me get through all of this. Skiing again after an absence of 4 years will hopefully take my mind off the inevitable. I booked it before this journey began. I am going to Sauze D’Oulx in Italy, a place I have ski’d several times before. Just praying for snow!

Here's the thing. The fact they are offering you RP means it's very likely contained. I remember feeling the same as you post diagnosis. But keeping busy and normalising life so you are doing the right thing. Does not mean you are not worrying - lost 5kg before my op.

I know it's hard to believe but the worry and anticipation is far, far worse than the actual procedure. We think the worst but in reality, in the vast majority of cases it is very straightforward. Yes it is 'serious' surgery but (unfortunately) they do them day in and day out. When I had mine there were 5 of us all booked in the same day and I suspect that is the same almost every day.

Always fancied going to Sauze😊 we use to ski in Europe every year but then found Colorado and were smitten. We did go back to Europe once a few years ago, I was skiing on my own and fell and broke my collar bone. Everyone just skid past/through me ignoring my groaning and I had to make my own way down. This wouldn’t have happened in the States so I vowed I wouldn’t go back to Europe. Not sure I’m the future if there will be much skiing in Europe although Colorado seems to be doing ok.

It does take time to sink but you WILL come to terms with it. if you’re struggling I would recommend you try and find a local support group and going and talk to other guys in the same boat as you…it really helps and can be very reassuring talking to others that have had RP by your surgeon.

Good luck,

Derek
