Pulmonary embolism post surgery

Above is a link to my previous question about what we thought was lymphoedema in my husband’s leg after surgery which included lymph node removal at the top of that leg. Initially he was told by specialist nurse that it was normal, but he pushed back and sent photos, following which nurse and surgeon said do nothing but it might need to be drained if no improvement within a week.

Two days ago he felt breathless so we went to A&E where they diagnosed DVT in the leg which had caused a pulmonary embolism in both lungs. Really let down by urology and oncology team as all doctors in A&E said it was textbook - single leg swelling post surgery is a red flag and it should have been investigated immediately. He has had no aftercare following surgery. He is home now and recommencing his recovery. This is really a public service announcement - trust your instinct and push for help if you feel something isn’t right, whatever the clinicians say.

I have to agree that you have to manage your own treatment within the NHS.

Really sorry to hear that Mary. You have been let down. In contrast, when I reported my swollen thigh, post surgery, I was called in straight away. They took measurements to confirm it was swollen followed by a scan (I can't remember which type). The first thing they checked for and ruled out was a DVT. I was eventually diagnosed with a Lymphocele.

Thanks Chris, I feel that is what should have happened. They appear to have made an assumption that it was a lymphocele or lymphoedema without checking to rule out anything more immediately life threatening.
