Unexpected PSA Rise

User
Posted 31 May 2024 at 11:35

Hi Everyone,

My PSA was less than 2 for long while, last December it had risen to 2.12.  My oncologist requested CT scan and Nuclear Bone scan which I had in January.

To use her words when I had my appointment with her on 1st February - “there is no evidence of cancer anywhere in your body”

I had my latest appointment yesterday and my PSA has risen to 4.59.

She’s now arranging more scans, which in some ways I can understand but the February results seemed ok.

I’m not sure what to make of this.

Hi Arthur,

I see that you've been on this journey for almost 12 years. You're an inspiration to us all. I'm very sorry to hear about this late apparent set back, but at least you appear to be in good hands.

Best of luck of luck mate.

Hi Arthur,

You and I seem to be in a similar position, I had my original treatment 18 years ago and over the past few years my PSA started to creep up, a few months ago I had a PET scan which showed a spot of cancer in the prostate but thankfully nothing elsewhere, PSA is 6.02.

Therefore I am on hormone therapy injections every 3 months until PSA drops then a rest until it rises again.

As suggested by others I would push for a PET scan.

All the best,

Roy.

Hi Arthur

It's a few years since I last wrote on here but I read your post and thought I would say Hello. I had pneumonia in November which my GP didn't treat which led to blood clots in one lung. Ambulance to A&E , once there was asked if they could insert a canula in my arm while in the waiting area to get blood thinners and antibiotics into my bloodstream quickly so I said yes. The nurse started the injection and within 10 seconds I was unconscious. Who knew that I am allergic to penicillin 🙂

I am now on blood thinners permanently which means that I bruise a bit easier but after 6mths they have reduced the dosage.

I was concerned to see the rise in your PSA but relieved that they have not found anything.

Hope that you get sorted with your new drug regime and that life gets back to normal soon.

Take care

Kevan

Arthur, hope the injections keep you safe. Good that someone was on the ball. I have had a couple of things crop up on scans that nobody actions.

Thanks Chris

Hello Arthur,

Sorry, that's not what anyone wants to hear.

Try pushing for a PSMA PET scan. It's usually more sensitive than a CT scan or Nuclear Bone scan. They might want to do another CT scan and/or Nuclear Bone scan first, particularly if they don't do the PET scans locally, and because PSMA PET scans can have a long waiting list.

Hopefully it will turn out to be one or two hot spots they can zap with SABR radiotherapy.

Arthur, sorry to see a rise in your PSA. My oncologist said yesterday even if your next scan doesn't show anything, have no doubt you have cancer somewhere. I don't have a prostate so we are in different situations. As already mentioned perhaps a PSMA scan and some SABR treatment.

Are you still on treatment.

Thanks Chris

Hi Chris,

I haven’t had any treatment since 2019 when I was having Decapeptyl injections every 3 months.

My PSA has been fine until December 2023.  My oncologist sounds like she’s suggesting repeating that treatment without actually saying so but wants to do the scans first, it’s odd that the scans in January didn’t showing any cancer anywhere.

Clutching at straws I had the Covid vaccination 3 days before my test tests were taken. I had the Moderna vaccine and both myself and my wife were quite ill afterwards.

Arthur, when I was on my cancer vaccine trial I had three or four lots of CT and bone scans , none of them saw anything, a few months after the last CT and bone scan the F18 1007 PSMA scan picked up the first pelvic tumour and 10 months later the Gallium 68 PSMA scan found a second tumor.

The COVID jab has been talked about on numerous occasions but I don't think there has been any proof. A water infection could be an option, my oncologist said yesterday that for a man without a prostate a water infection might elevate the PSA by 10 percent.

Thanks Chris

That may be very significant. I would push for a retest 4-5 weeks later.

Arthur, how are we defining treatment 🙂,are you still on HT or similar. Or when was you last HT treatment.

Thanks Chris

Chris,

My last HT treatment was in 2019, I’m not having any other treatment.   PSA results were ok until last December when it went up to 2.12

Andy,

My oncologist wants me to have more bloods tests before my next appointment, then she will make a decision regarding scans.

PSA in June was 4.59, the oncologist said leave it for a month and had more blood tests.  Now 7.18, CT scan and bone scan now arranged for 15th August.

Bit puzzled by all this as when I had the last scans they said there was no evidence of cancer anywhere it my body.

I think you really need to push for a PSMA PET scan. I'm guessing they don't have that capability locally or they would have already done it.

Arthur,, as Andy suggests, can you push for a PSMA scan, My last PSMA scan a few weeks ago at 1.4 didn't show anything, my oncologist said next test four months on from last and another PSMA scan at 3. He does suspect my cancer is now widespread.

Thanks Chris

Both scans showed no sign of cancer anywhere in my body but had a phone call from oncology a few days later asking me to go to A&E urgently, they’d picked up that I had blood clots in my right leg and lungs.  After spending 8 hours in A&E from 2pm to 10pm I managed to get a blood thinning injections to take home and self inject. That was an experience in A&E - absolute chaos jam packed with patients, at different times women fighting with security!

My GP said she couldn’t prescribe the specific injections for me so after going to and fro with the GP and hospital the hospital sent a prescription request for another type of injection to my GP so I could continue with the treatment. At one point the hospital wanted me to travel to collect the injections.

As much as I appreciate my oncology team after all this and having to get a taxi to the hospital I’m now in the process for transferring locally as per a previous post of mine.
