Concerned about my plan

Hi all,

I had a history of UTIs until 2017 I took a six-week course of antibiotics to remedy prostatitis following an MRI scan and ultrasound. This worked well until 2022 I started cycling. A UTI returned, and this was treated with antibiotics. I returned from holiday recently with symptoms of another infection. This time the Dr did my bloods including a PSA.

The PSA was 7.3. I had another meeting with another doctor. He asked me the normal questions about risk factors.

Did I have problems with ED "Yes, how many times do I pee at night "3 I mentioned my frequency of urinating was more. I'd had some burning sensation urinating.  No back or abdomen pain? "No

The doctor mentioned due to the UTI and that I had recently cycled this could be the reason for the elevated PSA.

We agreed that another PSA should be done in 2 months I was asked not to cycle and we both hoped I wouldn't get another infection this would give a more accurate reading.

I was happy with this reasoning at the time but I'm now thinking I wish I had asked to see a Urologist for peace of mind. On top of all that I feel like I'm urinating more since I've had the PSA result

Can I ask what your thoughts are am I being over-anxious? what would your thoughts be?

Many thanks all.

Give any infection chance to heal and then retest PSA. Infection can really skew a PSA so it needs sorting first.

I had a slightly elevated PSA this year of 3.2 - above the 2.5 limit that produces a follow up.

I went to the GP because, on two mornings, I had problems peeing. Other symptoms included back pain in the kidney area, shivers, and lethargy

The GP ordered a PSA test. A DRE showed an enlarged, but smooth, prostate.

4 weeks later, I did a second PSA test - this time I basically did nothing for 1 week prior - no sex or ejaculation (which was impossible anyway with my state of mind and anxiety) and the result was 2.2.

Because I had to wait 4 weeks after symptoms and before seeing a GP, my urine showed no infection, but the nurses here said any form of UTI would take 6 weeks to clear anyway.

I would suggest taking it easy in the week running up to your PSA test. No cycling, no strenuous exercising.

Make sure you get a DRE as well - but arrange for this to happen after the PSA test. A DRE can also cause an increase in PSA.

Good luck.
