Three out of four brothers diagnosed - waiting for biopsy results

User

My eldest brother passed away 6 weeks ago, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer at 48. He was 51.  My second eldest brother was diagnosed at the end of last year and had his prostate removed in January. My youngest brother was diagnosed around 3 months ago and is having his prostate removed next week. It’s now almost 2 weeks since my biopsy and we are waiting for the results. There are four of us and I’m the only one not officially diagnosed.
we just want to know but I am positive that I have it as my scan showed a lesion on my prostate.

I had to pay for a private scan as, despite the family history our gp wouldn’t do anything.  I am already exhausted after what we have been through - the waiting is unbearable.

my wife has decided that I haven’t got it - I think it’s the only way she can cope with it.

how long have people waited in average for their biopsy results?

Hi Scousesparra

I am so sorry to hear what your family has been and I can’t believe how dismissive your GP has been. I think the fact that you had to pay privately for a scan is disgraceful given your family history. The waiting is always the worst part of this journey and it must be so much worse for you. All I can suggest in that you keep as busy and active as possible and give yourself lots of treats to try and keep your mind off thinking the worst.

You could also give the nurses on here a call….they are fantastic and will spend time talking through your concerns.

I wish all the best.

Derek

I'm so sorry to hear about what you and your family are going through. Waiting for biopsy results can be incredibly stressful. In my experience, the wait can vary, but it's usually around 1-2 weeks. I understand how unbearable the waiting can be, especially given your family's history. It's good that you took proactive steps with the private scan. Stay strong, and I hope you get your results soon. We're here for you.

Hi Peter,

I'm sorry to hear about your close family history of the disease. My father and my younger brother had prostate cancer.

I think both my biopsy results took about two weeks. Have you had a PSA test mate?

Sorry to read this.  You and your brothers should probably get a prostate panel gene test (including but not limited to BRCA) and if positive then any sons you have they should probably also be tested plus they should start early PSA testing.  Gene mutations relatively rare from what I've read.  Far more likely to be just simply that prostate cancer is the single must heritable cancer, again from what I've read, but if there are any gene mutations then this can mean they may need to treat any prostate cancer found differently (both in terms of risk approach and actual treatments) than prostate cancer in men without a gene mutation.

Hi, yes… my PSA has been tested recently and was around 2.72. However, I feel that the PSA test can be insufficient and unreliable.  It’s been a battle to get it tested regularly (noting the family history) and it’s only through my persistence that I got it done at all.

It’s been such a stressful couple of years… I just want to know now - it will be two weeks on Thursday since my biopsy and they took 25 samples 😳

I agree, PSA tests aren't totally reliable,  but at least yours appears to be reasonable.

Thanks so much for your kind words. I actually now have an appointment with urology on 14th August to discuss my results and “next steps”….  They wouldn’t tell me anything over the phone so I’m still none the wiser.
at least I know when I will get all the info.

take care

So was my brother’s PSA before a private scan found his cancerous lesion.
my eldest brother did have a very high PSA, so it does confuse me a bit.
thanks for all the help and advice, it really helps.

PSA tests are generally a good indicator. However, some men have high PSA and little or no cancer, others can low PSA and have the disease.

Good luck on the 14th. Please keep us updated and we will do our best to help.
