Barrigel Rectal Spacer

Hi Everyone,

I am a 68 year old male, fairly fit and diagnosed with locally advanced prostate cancer. PSA started at 5.9 when first diagnosed about 3 months ago. It's down to 3.0 now but my Gleeson score is quite high.

I have started on hormone treatment which is planned for 18 months. Radiotherapy due to start on 9th Sept for seven and a half weeks. I am booked in to have a Barrigel Rectal Spacer on the 20th August and have to admit to being more than a little worried about the procedure!! Would be interested in hearing from anyone who has had a Barrigel Spacer and is/was the procedure as bad as it sounds?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Stuart

I had a SpaceOAR and the application procedure is the same as the Barrigel spacer (just material used is different). From your point of view it will be very similar to a biopsy. Absolutely nothing to fear or worry about. In and out in less than an hour.

Good luck.

Hi - I also had spaceoar and found it to be pretty painless - in stark contrast to recovering from the biopsy ! Should be no issues.

Thanks for the information Goose. Good to hear nothing to worry about. My biopsies were taken under a general anaesthetic so I couldn't compare.
