Cycling and radiotherapy

Any other cyclists out there who have had radiotherapy? I have recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer and am due to have radiotherapy. How soon after the radiotherapy ends will I be able to get back on my bike?

I cycled every day during my radiotherapy.

I did buy a noseless saddle, which means the saddle has nothing under any of the sensitive bits, it only has support under your pelvis (sit bones).

This one looks similar

although they were only half that price at the time.

It does take a few rides to get it adjusted comfortably. 5 years later, I still use them.

Thanks Andy62, this looks promising. I ride a Thorn Club Tour 700c. I use a reasonably relaxed riding position so one of these types of saddle with a lower saddle height could be just the thing.

Hi Bruce,

Yes…get on your bike😊 Keep the exercising going as much as you can before, during and after RT assuming you’re also on HT. It is SO important to keep active and prevent muscle loss. I didn’t buy a special saddle but it might help. Also, I would carry an emergency kit with you in case you are caught short either by your bladder or bowels. As you get towards the end of the treatment you may find you have some loss of control and and urgent need to go. I still carry toilet paper, wipes etc with me when I’m out walking or eBiking, even just having them stops you worrying about it.

Good luck and Have fun!

Yes Derek - that is my plan. I really enjoyed my ride the other day. It was just a 5 mile loop from my house but it does have a couple of hills. I was pleased with the way I got up them - life in the old dog yet (I’m 68). Thanks for your encouragement. 🚲

I got my ebike so that I could go further and faster…and still get exercise. And if I’m  having a bad day(and there are some😟) with no energy,  it allows me to get out and still have some fun😊

It is interesting that you say that. I have been thinking of getting an e-bike for transport (shopping, going to my part time job etc ). This seems like the perfect opportunity.

I now have an e-bike. I am very pleased with it. I rode it to my part time job (14.7 miles each way) and was impressed with how it went. I am now confident that I will still be able to get out on any bad days.

My radiotherapy planning appointment is 28th October so things are moving.

That’s great news Bbcycle, I hope you have lots of fun on it. I have so much more energy since finished HT and did two 50 mile routes last week. Going out again tomorrow with my wife, it will not be as far but it’s going to be a lovely day🌞

I love my e-bike. It is a Cube One 625, green with honey saddle and handlebar grips. I have ridden it to the shops in Bekeley (next village) and to work. I have got the hang of using the different power settings. Turbo is brilliant for getting to work in under an hour. I am confident that even if I have low energy days I will still be able to get out. 😺

Hi Bbcycle,

That’s great news, so pleased you like your cube. I am on my second Specialized Turbo Vado 4…I only changed for the bigger battery so I could go even further without range anxiety. Since being diagnosed Ive gone green.. electric lawnmower, ebike and now an EV, which I love!

im planning on a 40+ route tomorrow weather permitting, then I’m off to Fuerteventura on Thursday for 5 weeks, and we have e-bikes out there…..you don’t need to worry about the weather in Fuerte, biggest decision is where the coffee stop is😊

Enjoy your ebike!

I am well into my Radiotherapy now - only 4 more sessions (out of 20) to go. So far the side effects have been OK. I've had a bit of wind and some bowel issues. I use a pad when I leave the house now but have only needed it a couple of times and it was easy to manage. (I took Decho's advice about an emergency kit which I carry in a man bag) I am mainly noticing that I feel more tired now. Thankfully I am not (yet) experiencing any fatigue.
