RARP Surgery tomorrow

User

Well the day has come (well 6am tomorrow)

After reading everyone’s tips and tricks I am well prepared to at least understand what to expect in the immediate recovery stages. It’s alittle daunting but have totally distracted myself up to this point which seems to have worked well. I’ve stayed positive as diagnosed localised/contained but I guess you never really know until after the op. They’ll be stitching up hernia while they’re in there as well - hope that doesn’t add much to the recovery.
I’ll be off the Silodosin but I’m a week into the daily Cialia (5mg). This is giving bad aches in the legs and slight  headache - does this go eventually or only if you stop taking them?

Will give a progress report on the immediate recovery as I know this varies.

Just have to cut a hedge then I’m done

Until then

Pete

Great minds think alike Kev. The night before the op I had an early night and 'had sex'.  Whilst the wife stayed up and watched TV. 😁

Good luck - remember that the anticipation is 10x worse than the actual event.

My only recommendation at this stage is that when they offer you paracetamol then take it - the worst part of the whole procedure is the shoulder pain which is rather uncomfortable and everyone gets it. If you start taking the painkillers before it starts then you will not notice it as much. It's due to the CO2 gas that they inflate your abdomen with that irritates the diaphragm and weirdly that manifests as aching in the shoulders, right at the point that you are trying to rest :)

Morning Pete.

I hope everything goes like clockwork tomorrow. I found the actual operation the easiest part of my journey. Fingers crossed that you do too.

Best of luck mate and, when you feel up to it, please let us know how you got on.

My biopsy etc results were very similar to yours. I had prostatectomy over 12 years ago and I am still here and well. You are much much younger than me when I had surgery. Your recovery should be excellent. Good luck.

Hi Pete,

Apart from cutting the hedge..

I'm not trying to lower the tone here, but sex is a great way to unwind and sort out any pre op nerves.

I had just turned 56 when I had my operation and had "an early night" the night before the op.

Good luck.

Kev.

Talking of lowering the tone it might be a good idea to ‘Make Hay whilst the sun shines🌞’. It might be a while before you feel like, or able to have sex again😟….but there’s more to life than sex…..I think🤔

Good luck for tomorrow Pete, we’re all routing for you💪💪💪💪

Everything should be fine. I was crapping myself the night before but I really shouldn’t have as it was less pain and drama than having my tonsils out.

Please keep us posted!

Before my op never been in hospital before so did not know what to expect. Need not have worried since the nurses were brilliant and led you through everything step by step on the day.

Very best of luck

Hi Pete,

I'm exactly one week ahead of you. I had my RP surgery last Monday (the 19th). One week later and I'm already feeling a lot better. Definitely take it easy the first few days. The morning after my surgery I was feeling well enough to do some walking in the hospital corridors. I walked and walked and pushed the nurse to let me do more - and then out of no where I was hit with sudden dizziness and passed out cold on the hospital floor which resulted in me being kept in the hospital an extra day. I'm not trying to scare you. Just be a little extra cautious the few days. I find I can be feeling really well and then suddenly get winded - but 7 days out this is already improving significantly.

Funny coincidence, but I too was diagnosed with a small hernia which was picked up on my PSMA PET scan a few weeks ago. I asked my surgeon if it could be repaired during my RP but was told no.

Anyway, hope all went well and best wishes to a speedy recovery.

Hope all goes well today mate.

I'm 6 weeks post op and doing fine. You'll find it is way less of an issue than you think. As Steve said above, make sure you take the Paracetamol, as that shoulder pain will get you. Honestly though, it's a breeze. Good luck with your recovery, and please let us know how you are getting on.
