urinary retention so soon

Hi all

I've been on HT for the last 6 months with a few side effects, the odd hot flush, weight gain and high blood pressure, urinating hasn't changed, still fairly week and often.  On Friday I had my 3rd of 20 radiotherapy sessions. After the 1st day I got up in the night for one of the usual pee's & was wee'ing away when suddenly it just stopped & couldn't restart for about 30 seconds. Mentioned this to the radiotherapist & he didn't seem to think it was related to the treatment as it was too soon. Then last night I got up in the night desperate for a pee & just stood there. I could feel my bladder trying to release but it was almost as if someone had tied a knot in my little man. When I did finally manage to go it literally trickled out & took a good 5 mins to empty.
I was expecting some retention but is it normal for this to occur so soon into the radiotherapy treatment. Will speak to my oncologist but just wanted to get some feedback for you guys if possible.

Thanks

No this is not normal.

You need to tell the radiographer, and they have a route to get you to see urology the same day, because radiotherapy treatment can't be stopped. They should probably do a flexible cycstoscopy to see what's happening, and/or they will fit a catheter.

If you can't pee, you need to go straight to A&E - that's a medical emergency.

Ian, 100 percent with Andy , I have had retention on a few occasions. Do not wait until you are bursting to do something about it, if you can't urinate get yourself to A&E. Urine backing up into the kidneys it not good and believe me is very painful.

Thanks Chris

Hi Ian,

Sorry to hear you’re having this trouble, Chris and Andy are correct…I think I would get myself to A&E rather than wait for your next session. Presumably you didn’t have any sessions over the weekend so now might be a good time.

I hope you get it sorted.

Hi all, thanks for your feedback/comments, I had these occurrences twice over last weekend & both occasions were at night. I spoke with the radiotherapist on Monday who suggested it could be that as my bladder is full while I am asleep & my muscles around my bladder are working overtime & then not releasing when I do finally try to go. So the suggestion was take ibuprofen just before bed which should help relax the muscles, not drink 2-3 hours before bed & if I wake up needing a wee then get up and go and don't try holding off.
So the first couple of nights I tried the above, then cut out the ibuprofen for the next couple of nights and so far all is good no further incidents.

Once again thanks for your comments
