Hi

Anyone have experience of playing golf following RARP?

Surgeon gave green light for nine holes next week which will be 6 weeks after the op.

I'm not a golfer, nor had a prostatectomy, but having done PSA testing and awareness at golf days, I'm surprised abdominal muscles would be ready for [golf] driving that soon. Putting, maybe.

Golf can be an issue for some men with spinal mets too.

Leonard, I see from the other thread that you are doing well in terms of pad use which is encouraging.

For me 6 weeks was the point where I started to dare doing physical activities, but I was still constrained by leaking quite a lot. I am not a golfer, but I am pretty sure I wouldn't have managed a 9-hole round without a wet patch on my trousers (or an unscheduled dash to a nearby bush for a change of pad)!

Good luck, it it works it will be a great psychological boost.

Morning Len.

As a keen runner daily I couldn’t wait to get up & running again. I waited the full 6 weeks until I tried & to the day off I went, did a slower pace but managed 3 miles, fortunately the incontinence wasn’t a problem for me.

What I would say after playing a bit of golf ( poorly ) that the twisting of the abdomen could be a problem, take it easy & listen to your body.

All the best.

Jeff.

Hi Adrian

Exact handicap is now 8.1

Pads no problem mainly precautionary 😂.

Hi Guys

Many thanks for your thoughts.

I think I'll give the golf a miss for a bit longer. Maybe think about it he week after next and even then just practice chipping and putting and maybe walk a few holes with my golfing buddies.

Might start full swing beginning of October which will be a full 2 months after the operation.

Can't be too careful.

Sensible decision I think. You have had major internal surgery and don't want to set yourself back. A golf swing calls for some abrupt movement and it would not work well to just try to swing slowly.

There's no point in spoiling a good walk.

Hi All

Quick update.

Had my first nine holes of golf on 18/09 with no adverse effects. Played 18 holes couple of days later using a buggy and again no adverse effect, hit the ball really well.

Played in a Saturday club competition on 29/09 and only bloody won it!!

So there is a golfing life after surgery......FORE!

Hi Len

What's your handicap, apart from heavy pee pads? 😉

Wow, that's impressive! No wonder you were itching to start playing again. I never got below 24. 🙂 I'm glad that you're back into the swing of things.

I haven't played for over 30 years, but I bought my ten year old grandson a set of junior clubs and we whack a few balls down at the local rugby pitch.

Hi, I was told a minimum of 12 weeks before swinging a club apart from a putter.  I waited exactly the 12 weeks however I've now still got stomach pain 23 weeks post surgery. I had a CT scan last week and results this Thursday to see what it is. Doctor cannot feel any hernia but I suspect it may be. My advise is take it steady, going for a run or walk is one thing but you put a lot of strain on your abs during a golf swing. It's winter now so build yourself up ready for next year.

Hi Neil

Sorry to hear about your stomach pain. hope the hospital sorts it out.

I'm playing but taking it easy in that I rest for three days after each game so instead of playing 4 times a week currently only 2 per week. Seems to be working but if I get anything remotely like an abdominal pain I'll stop.

Cheers, bit of an update as I've just spoken to my urology nurse for my latest PSA test results which was undetectable so that's great news. Anyway while she was on the phone she checked my file as I'd reported the pain to them previously, and she gave me the results of my CT scan. Small hernia on lhs (although that's not where I've got the pain. Pain is central and to the right) however CT scan did show diverticulitis which makes sense with my symptoms. So, to cut a long story short, it wasn't the golf. By the way, you've got a great handicap, I'm still in the upper 20s but love playing. My theory is the more shots you take the better valve for money it is 🤣🤣

Hi Neil

Pleased you have a diagnosis. The doctors can now plan a treatment pathway.

Good to know the symptoms weren't caused by the golf but I'm still going to take it easy for a while.
