Post op incontinence levels

Hi all, I’ve recently had my prostrate removed (2 weeks) I am dry at night but get leaks during the day when I cough or sneeze. It feels as this is a reasonably good place to be at this stage but there’s so much conflicting information on what is a good or bad level of incontinence following surgery. Any views or advice would be appreciated.

Hi Duncan, you are in a great place so soon after surgery when everything inside is still raw and yet to heal. If you are doing your kegels, then you know how to tense your pelvic floor muscle. When you feel a cough or sneeze coming, try tensing the muscle; it may help with the leak. A word of caution - don't be too disappointed if you have a bad day. Progress is not necessarily linear.

Best wishes, Peter

Thanks Peter, I’m focusing on the kegels and appreciate this is a bit of a journey!

thanks again, it does give me some confidence

That's really good at this stage.

When you do something which you know causes you to leak, do a single pelvic floor contraction to cover it.

You are in a good place fella. Keep up the exercise and eventually everything will come together.

I guess for some of that time you have had a catheter fitted so it's not 2 weeks from op. I started counting the weeks until the odd drip stopped from when it was removed. Don't be upset if you get the odd set back, for me at least it was not a straight line to recovery.

Thanks, I had the op on the 21st of August. The catheter and clips were taken out on Tuesday this week, 3rd of September. It feels like progress, but I’ll take on board what you say about having set backs.

Hi , had prostate surgery 24th July but because of infection ended up with catheter in for 7 weeks.

Catheter removed 6th Sept, so less than a week. Bladder control ok if I am seated or asleep - can go from 11 to 6 with barely a drip, but any movement and leak - almost continual dribble.

Anyone had experience of catheter being in so long and how long took to regain bladder control. Doing pelvic floor exercises again, but was advised not to do these with catheter in.

any advice welcome
