Brachytherapy two years on

It will be almost two years since I had my Brachytherapy procedure. I have just spent five nights in my local hospital due to having a Urinary Track Infection / acute kidney infection ( pylonephritis ). The inital symptoms were loss of appetite , a dull pain in my lower right back and the urge to pass water every three minutes. Initially I registered for triage with my GP surgery however when I started passing blood in my urine I went straight to A&E.

After spending a night sleeping on a trolley in A&E I was moved to a cardio ward as that was the only spare bed they had. I was treated with I/V fluids and antibiotics.

Four days later I was released and I am on oral antibiotics for nine days.

The doctor I saw said I had done the correct thing going to A&E as any delay would have made things much worse.

I had a chat with a urologist and he informed me that once the prostate has been “zapped” by any type of radiation you are prone to UTI’s😳

Hi Dave

Good to hear from another Brachytherapy guy and I will take note about the Possible uti infections but i have had no real problems and still get up a couple of times a night but never with any urgency possibly the white wine i flush my system with.

I am 8 years from Brachytherapy on the 25th September and starting to feel like an old timer on here, and tune in ever day just incase anybody wants to take the same route.Hope the infections will clear soon.

Hello John, greetings to you.

I am still around 14.5years after LDR. I visit the site most days and only chip in if I have something useful to add and maybe help some guy facing the treatment dilemma. I boast octogenarian status now and still Golf 3 times every week and oh I nearly forgot ride my mountain bike every other day for 45/60 minutes. I am happy to pass any details of my Prostate Cancer journey. Forgive me but I gotta add that I rarely have to get out of bed to urinate unless maybe I have had too much red vino.

I'm 5 years after HDR Brachy.

I've had a couple of incidents of bleeding prostate over the last year, and one UTI, but that was carelessness on my part cleaning up the blood.

I work with a few urologists who are always saying radiotherapy causes this and that problem. Well, they only get to see the patients who do have problems and not those who don't, so even though it's small minority, that's all the urologists see, so in their eyes, all radiotherapy patients have problems.

Conversely, the oncologists get to see 30% of the prostatectomy patients, for whom the procedure fails.
