Questions to ask regarding test results

Hello everyone!

My partner has been advised that he needs to have a biopsy as his MRI has flagged something. The nurse didn't go into any further detail regarding the scan in terms of what they have seen/size etc.

What questions should we be asking at this stage?

Thanks everyone x

Hello.

I'm sorry that you've had to join us, but welcome to the forum.

The MRI is only an indication that something maybe untoward. It will give a PI-RADs or Likert score which  gives what likelihood there is of it being cancer.

My advice would be to ask for a copy of the MRI scan.

Have they said whether they intend doing a follow up biopsy?

Hi Adrian, thanks for replying so quickly.

He will need to have a follow up biopsy, he did ask if he could be sent a copy of the results but the nurse said she couldn't give them to him and his GP hasn't received them yet.

The nurse said that she would be able to call again on Friday, so that we would both be there to discuss the MRI results. Apart from the PI-RADS / Likert score is there anything else that we should be asking? Is there any other information that they can tell us from the MRI at this point?

Thanks again x

You should, somehow, be able to get a copy of the report. I found it important to keep copies of tests, scans, biopsies and consultations, as it's easy to forget things.

I'd also be asking how many suspicious areas there are and how close they are to the edge of the prostate and the radiological cancer staging.

Good luck.

Thanks again Adrian, I naively expected that we would have full access to this information so I'm surprised that the nurse said we couldn't have a copy.

Thanks for the additional information to ask for, hopefully we'll get full details in the next couple of days.
