just diagnosed, having TURP Tuesday

Hi all

First of all I would like to thank Prostate Cancer UK and everyone on this forum for all the information and support you have given to me. Who would have thought a visit to my GP would have led me here.

My diagnosis

T3b. N1. M0. PI-RADS Score 5. Gleason 4+5. PSA 14.8

Just waiting for the PET CT scan results.

The Urology consultant said I needed an urgent TURP procedure due to high volume of urine retention. I am booked in for an TURP operation Tuesday next week. I have my fingers firmly crossed it goes well.

I have started hormone treatment and so far have not suffered from any side effects. Perhaps they will start soon?

I also have my first Oncology appointment (telephone consultation) in a couple of weeks. Not sure what to expect as nobody has really discussed treatment or whether my cancer is curable or just treatable.

If anyone has any comments or advice I would be very happy to hear from you.

Hi

Thanks for your comments. I'm taking it a step at a time and hoping for the best. I will be glad to get the TURP surgery over with and then I can concentrate on treatment of my cancer. Hopefully the Oncology consultant will have something to say next week about my treatment

Hi Sparky. Be aware there is a downside to the SpaceOAR gel. Given your T3B staging, your cancer has already broken out of the prostate. If you have the SpaceOAR gel injected and cancer cells get covered by it or trapped between it and the rectal wall, the SpaceOAR gel could end up shielding those cancer cells from the radiation treatment. Unfortunately,  nothing's ever easy but discuss it with the radiologist.

Hi. I was T3b but I went down the surgical route, so I can't best advise you but this post will put you back at the top of the pile to get it noticed

Hi. thanks for your reply. The surgical route was not discussed with me. Perhaps my cancer has spread further than yours?

Hi Sparky.

Sorry to see you here mate but welcome to the forum. On the information you've given your disease is curable. There are others on here with a similar diagnosis. Hopefully they'll join this conversation.

I believe that most surgeons won't attempt surgery on T3b 1N.

Best of luck mate

Hi Sparky,

I'd ask about a rectal spacer, if you're not told about it. It's a gel that's injected between your prostate and rectum. It moves them apart so that the exposure to radiation on your rectum is reduced. Hopefully reducing the side effects in that area. It then naturally dissolves over 6 months.

It was mentioned to me by a surgeon, but not the oncologist, so I ended up asking for one which was subsequently approved. It does sound like its not necessarily available everywhere though.

Here's a link to the company who produced it:

About SpaceOAR™ Hydrogel

I'd read other's accounts about it too as obviously they're going to say it brilliant, but my view was anything extra that can help limit side effects sounded like a winner to me.

Wishing you all the best for your treatment

John

Hi John

Thanks for that bit of  information. I will certainly ask about that gel. Anything that helps to prevent problems caused by the radiotherapy must be worth a try.
