chronic prostatitis / cpps action

Hello all,

I'm a 3 year sufferer of chronic prostatitis. I've recently had it confirmed via MRI. Inflammation at the bottom of the prostate. I'm currently waiting for prostatic massage which I'm slightly concerned about given it's poor results.

I've figured out my two biggest symptom causes are caffeine and ejaculation/sex. With a big emphasis on ejaculation which is near 100% on making things feel worse.

I'm seriously angry at the way it's been handled by the NHS - with how long it took to diagnose. I'm not particularly happy with the treatment options. This thing seems reluctant to leave despite physio, a multitude of drugs, cystoscopy, scans, counselling etc.

Having just turned 37, I'm really concerned that this could be around for the foreseeable. I'm nowhere near retirement which if it was an option, I would 100% take. If offered I would have the damn thing removed.

I'm wondering if there's any ongoing groups/campaigns out there that are trying to pressure NHS action? This is an awful condition and it really should have more options than management, because of low research.

I understand your problem. I suffered from prostatitis for many years before I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I have a suspicion that continuous inflammation of the prostate for many years may be the cause of my prostate cancer - there is no scientific evidence for this - but there is some anecdotal evidence that serious cyclists may be at risk. After my diagnosis I had an option to remove my prostate which I chose hoping that my prostatitis would leave with the prostate which it did. I no longer have any prostatitis symptoms. That was over 13 years ago. Of course I am not suggesting this as a cure!

I tried prostate massage with no avail but there is some evidence that 'milking' the prostate helps some people.

As far as I know from my long experience prostatitis has no cure but it waxes and wanes and can disappear completely. In my view it is advisable to keep your eyes on your PSA.
