The start of the journey?

Hi all,

Just found this wonderful resource. I've not been diagnosed as yet. Had bloods taken about 3 weeks ago, GP suggested I have a PSA test, I'd had one done slightly before COVID which must have been fine. No symptoms, apart from getting up often just once during the night for a pee. So I was shocked to be brought back into GP surgery to be told PSA is 9.1. (age 67) although DRE suggested no abnormality, I've been referred to urology, going tomorrow only 12 days after being referred, actually could have been in last week but I had COVID!

Reading through the posts on here has been a revelation to me, since getting PSA result  I've been very anxious, trouble sleeping and now it appears this is quite normal. I feel reassured that the journey I'm setting out on has been followed by all of you on here, and that the diagnostic procedures are not as worrying as I'd imagined. One thing I've taken from what I've read on here is that I need to stop overthinking things, and I certainly need to stop Googling symptoms.

Anyway, hopefully things will be ok tomorrow, I'll update when I know something concrete.

Welcome aboard Iainmcr,

As you have already discovered this site is a mine of great information and experiences, use it to the max.

I'm not a medic so can only advise on my own experience. I'd guess that the next stage for you will be an MRI scan to show how the prostate looks, then they will decide from there.

I agree totally about leaving Dr Google well alone but one site I did find helpful is the link below that gives good information regarding the potential tests that you may have coming up.

Good luck with it all and please keep us updated

Thanks Dave,

Yes it's to be quarterly PSA and annual MRI at my local hospital, nurse specialist is by brothers pal so I'll be well looked after! The department has a good reputation too.

Hi Ianmcr

ive just started looking on the forum and wish I had earlier. Like you I had a quick referral via gp after PSA tests in May/ June and had the MRI within four days of seeing the specialist, then biopsy two weeks after. just had my prostatectomy this weekend.
The process is really quick and the care you’ll get is amazing. You’re in great hands so hopefully they’ll get you through really quickly if there is anything there, the MRI is really effective. Biopsy after that is straightforward if they suggest it.

It’s totally understandable having disrupted sleep and feeling anxious- I had that a lot before the diagnosis. Fingers crossed for you that all works out ok

Hi Dave/Ben and others,

Thanks for the replies.

A quick update, I was seen in urology at my local hospital on 13th November, had an MRI on 21st & a Biopsy yesterday. All done in 3 weeks which I reckon is pretty good service from the NHS.

The MRI showed 'an area which needed further examination' apparently on the left side only and contained. I'm due to get the results next Thursday.

Finally getting somewhere!

Firstly PC has been confirmed but it looks to be a very slow burner, Gleeson 3 + 3 group 1 T 1, N 0 and M 0 and I've opted for Active Surveillance. The bowel 'mass' identified by the MRI was initially classed as a lesion but following a CT scan & Biopsy has now been identified as a Polyp which will be removed tomorrow.

Thanks for the update. AS is a good option, but make sure it is active. Regular PSA tests and MRIs moderately often.
