How much is too much for post op / post catheter activities

Finally got a date for my prostate removal, which will be open surgery. For those who have gone through this, what daily activities did you find were ok, and which were not ok after removal of the catheter please?

I know that anything that markedly increases abdominal pressure is to be avoided, likewise anything that puts pressure on the perineum such as riding a bicycle. What I do not know is how much is too much.

Can you still bend over while seated to cut toenails for example? Pick up things from the floor, as long as they are not heavy?

Any advice appreciated.

Kiwispirts, I have had a catheter on numerous occasions, all but one were after minor procedures. The catheter may make moving uncomfortable and bending can get your attention. The catheter won't stop you moving around.

More relevant is, how much is too much after surgery. I was back behind my desk after 5 weeks, but I didn't have open. We are all different and there is no standard answer. Take easy but keep mobile and listen to your body.

Thanks Chris

Just curious as if there were specific concerns your Doctor as to why he is doing open surgery versus Robotic Laparoscopic as their are significant differences in the type of surgery. Not only in the ability of the Surgeon doing robotic having more detailed zooming in enlargement views of the tissues to make detailed incision’s and cuts for nerve sparing, less bleeding and faster recovery. If their are specific medical concerns then open may be the best or only option.

The surgeon I was assigned to in the New Zealand system only does open, and has a very good and extensive track record. Happy with my choice.

Are you not married? 🙂

Joking apart. I think your recovery from open surgery will effect what you can or can't manage to do, a lot more than the catheter.

I believe, that in the UK about 90% of prostatectomies are now done robotically, so I don't there'll be many on here who've had open surgery.

I am married 😀, but I have a terrible character flaw. I am not comfortable sitting still while others are working. But you are right, for the sake of my recovery I may have to practise that skill. 😁
