I’m hoping that sharing this will help others to feel a bit less alone, it’s a pretty rough ride, but with help you can get through it.

I don't think I will ever understand the mentality that makes people run ultras.... but thanks for the story. Coming out the other side having had cancer is always a win.

Yeah, I'm not sure I understand it either!  Though in my case I've realised I was trying to prove something, to myself I think.  That's a whole other story though.

Yes agree, coming out the other side is a win, and I'm incredibly lucky and grateful.

Thanks for sharing. It is an excellent write-up despite the circumstances. I have heard about ultras before, never delved deeper into.it. I thought it involved running long distances, was unaware that it was a track event and you ran round the track x times?

Technically an ultra is anything over about 30 miles. The “how many times can you run around a track in 24 hours” is a very niche category of ultra (for obvious reasons !)

Hi Luke.

Welcome to the forum mate and thanks for relating your journey thus far.

I'm twenty years older than you. I used to be fit but unfortunately I now even struggle to walk long distances let alone run them.

I'm ex Forces and was good pals with a PTI whose exercise training for overall fitness programme, was running 2 miles a day,  for cardiovascular benefits and 500 press ups (5×100) and 500 sit ups (5×100) daily to maintain upper and abdominal strength. I followed this exercise regime until I was in my mid forties.

Unfortunately it didn't prevent me having a heart attack 18 months ago, and caused arthritis in all my over exercised joints.

Exercise is obviously good for you but  in my opinion, like any pleasures, it can become obsessional and is best done in moderation?

Having said that a degree of of fitness definitely improves general health and has certainly physically assisted me in battling prostate cancer.

Setting challenges is also generally a good thing for fighting this disease, They can improve your resilisence and mental health, so long as the goals are realistically achievable.

My goal was simply to get my life back as close to what it was before cancer walked into it. I think I'm getting there. 🤞

I wish you well mate, and hope that your recovery is as long as the distances you run. 👍
