Hi
I'm 48 and this is my story so far.
Noticed ocassional cloudy urine that persisted on and off for a couple of months. So, at a time when I thought I was also having UTI symptoms, finally went to GP. He sent me to Urologist who booked me in for Flow test and US scan of renal area.
Flow test showed slightly below normal flow.
US scan showed urine retention in bladder and a slightly enlarged prostrate. Otherwise all fine including areas like kidney and liver.
Back with the urologist: he theorised that the ocassional cloudy urine being caused by urine retention (itself caused by enlarged prostrate) combined with ocassions when there is low fluid intake. This he said was causing the sitting urine to become murky as it was not being flushed out and cause of assumed UTI. He suggested 1) good fluid intake to keep retained water in bladder "fresh" 2) Antibiotics for assumed UTI 3) cytoscopy to rule out any obstruction and 4) PSA test.
It was slightly surreal to look at your own insides but cytoscopy confirmed "normal urethra, enlarged prostrate, healthy bladder mucosa and normal trigonometry and ureteric orifices". Urologist not concerned with results but gave option of taking alpha blockers for enlarged prostrate. I declined as urine retention isn't causing me discomfort or leading to frequent urination, just can be unsettling when looking at it and worry on my part it could be somthing serious!
He was ready to discharge me.back to GP when he remembered to look at results of PSA test. After a short pause he confirmed it was high at 5.88. He did go on to say it could be the enlarged prostrate but we should do an MRI scan nonetheless. That is booked for next Friday. In the meantime I am worried sick about PC after reading other stories on here of those with similar or less readings.
A few questions:
1) if urologist knows I have an enlarged prostrate then do guidelines allow for leeway in deciding next steps?
2) assuming I did have a UTI at the time of visiting Urologist then should I have waited longer than I did before taking PSA test. Urologist just told me to wait until 7 day course of antibiotics finished so I booked it on 8th day.
Sorry for the long post but Wife and I have spent the whole weekend worrying and just anxiously waiting for MRI
Have this forum to be very helpful so thank you to all the contributors.
