Dark coloured particles in urine

Hello, I'm a first time poster.

I had a robot assisted radical prostatectomy 5 weeks ago. Apart from some leakage, my urination has been relatively ok. However a few days ago I started to pass dark coloured particles. My cancer nurse at the hospital said it is post-surgery scabbing beginning to break away and is "normal". I have no other obvious symptoms of infection. I am surprised that this has started weeks after the operation. Does anyone else have a similar experience?

I did mate. I think it's quite common.

Hi Alan,

I had RARP surgery about 10 weeks ago (1st October to be exact). I had exactly the same as you about 3/4 weeks ago, so around the 6 week mark. For about a week my urine was either normal colour or had a bit of a pinkish tint to it and at time there were "bits" in the toilet that shouldn't have been there. Like you my nurse said it was a combination of scabbing coming away or clips dissolving.

I must admit that since then my continence situation has vastly improved. I'm on 1 pad a day on most days except when I go to the gym.

I did have a bit of a cold  man flu last week and I must admit that sneezing has become a bit of a nemesis 😂

Good luck with the rest of the recovery. Only tip I can give is be careful on the days you feel good and healed, it doesn't take a lot of doing too much for the discomfort to kick in.

I recall something similar from long ago.  Thinking it was a good thing as it was healing.  No sign of the red stuff.  Keep taking it easy in that area.  Scar tissue can be a problem if you damage the wound.

You might compare it's healing progress with the wound on your stomach.  The big one took quite a while to fully clear and let you know if you upset it.

Thanks for sharing your experience Dave. Since I had my catheter removed, my only incontinence has happened when I'm walking but it's not too bad. Lying down or sitting is fine. I've had no signs of fresh blood either. I was very active pre-surgery so it's frustrating having to "take things easy". I don't go to the gym, but I do like cycling so I hope I get the ok from the doctor to resume that soon. All the best for Christmas & New Year. Alan.

Alan ,I was still passing bits and scabs at least six weeks after surgery,I had got back to my desk job after six weeks. The first couple of weeks post op bits of scabs a blood can be a sign of doing to much.

Thanks Chris
