Medroxyprogesterone acetate

Five months ago I started Hormone injections as my cancer had returned after 18years since my original Radiotherapy treatment.

Unfortunately I have been having really bad periods of sweating especially at night, oncology nurse has suggested    the above medication, which seems to have many side effects including insomnia which I struggle with at the moment.

Anyone been precribed this medication, did it work, and did the suggested side effects seem as bad as suggested?

Thanks.

Although NICE recommends trying Medroxyprogesterone first, in practice I tend to hear many more people prescribed Cyproterone Acetate first. The third drug for this is Megestrol. They all require liver function tests and full blood counts while you're on them, to ensure your liver copes with them OK. I haven't heard of other side effects.

Hi Devonroy.

I have been on HT (Zoladex) for three years with the inevitable side effects. My PC is incurable, and I will be on HT for life. When the night sweats became bad, I was offered Medroxyprogesterone, but I declined as I did not wish to add more hormones to those that were already causing me problems.

Later I was offered acupuncture to help alleviate these side effects. I had 14 sessions. It was an interesting experience, but it did not work for me. It clearly does for some people.

More recently I was offered Medroxyprogesterone again and this time I accepted. It's not a life-changer, but it has helped a lot. I now have far fewer hot flushes, and they are nowhere near as intense. The only downside is that the daily Medroxy took about three months before I felt any real relief. After the first three months, I continued to improve. I now get maybe three or four mild hot flushes in 24 hours. Any side effects are minimal in my experience.

I hope this helps. Good luck with your ongoing treatment.

Thank you all for your replies, I have been doing some research of my own and think I will leave alone at the moment and try and cope without any extra medication, I take enough as it is at the moment.
