Side Effects Tiredness

User

Hi,

I'm a 68 year old male finished my 37 hits of radiotherapy at the end of October this year. I am still on hormone treatment (Prostap) and have another year to run with that. I do suffer with frequent hot flushes and tend to get tired quite quickly if I exert myself. I was wondering if anyone else who has been through a similar course of treatment has or had the same problem. I like to lead an active lifestyle and wondered how long these side effects might last?

Hi Steve,

the good news for you would seem to be that your HT is limited to a year. It's possible [varies between different people] that you'll still have hot flushes and a lack of energy for the duration of your HT and up until you get a return  of testosterone, which could be a year after you finish HT. Proviso: testosterone doesn't always make a comeback after HT.

HT reduces muscle mass, increases body fat and can decrease bone density over time [but the last one probably won't be an issue with the short time you're on HT].

Peeing frequency should improve gradually and it's worth doing exercise to strengthen the muscles for bladder control. If you don't get any improvement in the next few months it's probably worth seeing your GP.

Do what you can to stay as active as possible but don't beat yourself up if your physical performance is below par, for now.

I finished 33 sessions of SRT 6 weeks ago and am taking Decapeptyl HT. They are saying I should take it for 2 years but 12 months will be my limit. From what I read there is very little benefit in taking it for longer and I want to avoid bone damage and maintain QOL. I am also tired come late afternoon and suffer from urgency, but not incontinence. I use weights daily to maintain muscle mass and my appetite is unbelievable. My weight is steady. Hot flushes are a real nuisance but a small price to pay for what I hope will prove to be a successful treatment.

Happy new year to you all

Stuart, I think tiredness is a common experience. I had salvage RT with HT a couple of years ago, but even that long after finishing I still run out of steam at the end of the day.

For the first weeks and months after completing RT I felt quite run down, though I did try to maintain fitness. I don't know what "active lifestyle" means in your case, but I have more or less maintained my previous activities - but as I said above I need my sleep at the end of the day.

Thanks very much for that J-B interesting to know. I did read somewhere else that some people felt really run down after a couple of months of ending the RT treatment. Having to still get up 4 or 5 times in the night for a pee doesn't help 😅.

We will get there!!
