Treatment not working….

Dad is still battling every day putting on a strong front as these brave men do. I went with him for his oncologist appointment and they told him, his chemo was no longer working and to stop taking. To stay on the dextramethason but they said nothing more than that. They would monitor his spa has gone up to 58 and they said they won’t bother with blood tests now either. It’s like they can do no more, he is too weak for any more harsh treatment radio etc but what else can I do or what do I expect the worst. I feel in limbo and dad confused.

Hi Amanda.

Seven years ago I lost my dad, aged 88 years, to prostate cancer after being diagnosed with advanced disease seven years before that. I can fully empathise with how you are feeling.

I've read some of your previous posts but haven't managed to establish your dad's age. It seems he is one hell of a battler and has been fighting stage 4 prostate cancer for over 8 years. Unfortunately it now appears that there is little else medically that can be done for him. However, I'm sure that your love for him and the continuance of your incredible support, will still give him great comfort.

I send big hugs to you both.

Hi Amanda.
I am in the same situation as your Dad. I had 7 chemo sessions and it made me very ill so it was stopped then. Last one was in September and I’m only on Degarelix Hormone Therapy and Dexamethasone now.

Last appointment in December they mentioned quality of life a few times and have delayed any further treatment until we have another discussion middle of February.

There are a couple of further treatments that can help slow down the cancer or aid with any pain.

Unfortunately we are where we are and have to try to get our heads around it and make the most of our days.

I am 69 now and heading for my 70th… I’ve been diagnosed since January 2018 and it has been a rollercoaster of a ride.

I suspect they are saying they are not interested in the PSA anymore as for your Dad it is, like me, making the rest of our days as good and comfortable as possible not about chasing the cancer around. I do have PSA on my blood test but mainly as I ask for it.

Bit surprised they aren’t doing any blood tests just to check how organs and bones are doing . Maybe ask about that.

It will mean such a lot to him to have you supporting him on this journey.

Thank you so much for your reply. Dad is 84 and battled all the way, the cancer has spread all over tomorrow I take him in for another op to remove some skin cancer. I’ve eventually got hold of the dr to go and see her face to face to have a chat in a couple of weeks. Just want to know I’m doing all I can for him, as he has always for me. Good luck with your fight.
best wishes

Amanda
