Clarithromycin - effect on bacterial prostatitis

Hi all, my first post here.

Bottom line up front: a long course of clarithromycin (a first line simple antibiotic) for a chest infection alleviated my symptoms - however the symptoms returned after the course.

does anyone else have any experience around this? I have a prostatitis diagnosis but it is currently written as non-bacterial (I.e. auto-inflammatory).

In me, it presents as mild pain in pereneum, and moderate to severe pain in urethra and end of penis - especially after passing urine. In many ways it presents as a really bad UTI.

Not sure what kind of response I’m really looking for here but just wanted to see if anyone had shared my experience.

thanks guys

Patrick

Patrick, looking at your profile you are in a very unusual situation to get prostatitis  presumably at 14 ? which is probably why there has been a lack of response to your post. Perhaps bumping the post up the list may get an answer.

Thanks Chris

Thanks Chris.

I was 17 when the first symptoms appeared.

it is unusual and it feels like nobody wants to help me. Because nobody knows what to do I am ushered out the door ASAP by doctors.

My condition is worsening but NHS not interested generally. I wait 8 months for a 15 minute conversation where the consultant tells me “it’s untreatable”.

Patrick, have you asked for a referral to a top urologist. I went to Manchester to see a top professor about a bladder issue, yes he did tell me it was beyond help, fortunately it doesn't impact my QOL too much. Andy 62 hosts a zoom meeting that has access to some urologists , although primarily prostate cancer they do include general urology issues. Andy, tell me off if I am out of order.

I have sent you a message with the two people thought to be at the top of their game. You won't be able to reply to the message, you need do a few posts before getting rights to send messages. We are not allowed to mention surgeons names etc in the open forum.

Thanks Chris

Its inflamation you know that so have you looked into an anti inflammatory diet or suppliments that may help you?

The antibiotic you mentioned shuts down the cytokine response thats why it gave relief

I suggest you learn about inflamation and what can help reduce it

There is obvs something else going on with you for this to start at puberty, testosterone usually protects men from autoimmune issues maybe you didnt make enough at puberty  idk?

Hi Patrick,

I had similar experiences after I had a biopsy. First thought I had a uti and got antibiotics which seemed to improve then it came back. Had water tested 3 times and all clear and spoke to the oncologist and doctor and seems like it is prostatitis but non bacterial. Unfortunately with meds I’m on and not being very tolerant at the best of times with anti inflammatories was left to my own devices. I’ve found staying hydrated and warm baths tend to ease it. Short term placing ice again helps but generally don’t know if the docs would say the improvement is psychological or not. Anyway after a few weeks it’s gone down to a dull ache which I can almost forget about but am sure there will be flair ups again.

Good luck

S
