Radiation Proctitis Issues

Following a RARP in December 2022 my PSA reached 0.2 in March 2024 resulting in 20 fractions of radiotherapy and the commencement of two years of hormone treatment (Bicalutamide).

I have an issue whereby I can’t pass wind without being on a toilet as I pass mucus - more frustrating rather than unpleasant. The ‘severity’ of this varies. I have spoken with a bowel surgeon and the cancer nurses at the hospital where I was treated and they are of the opinion I have radiation proctitis. I have been told this could clear in the next 6 months but could last for some time. My diet is generally good and I can’t identify any foods or trends.

Has anyone had experience of this and found that certain foods make the situation worse?

Probbo, I had a similar situation following the same treatment and you are probably aware many of us have had mucus issues. My SRT was nearly eight years ago so the timeline is a bit fuzzy. I don't recall any food being particularly worse than others. It did eventually calm down  and my motions became even more settled than before the SRT. The SRT did do some serious damage to my bladder.

Thanks Chris

If it any consolation, I similarly found my ability to pass wind alone affected after SRT. It wasn't an enjoyable side effect, sometimes painful (cramps) as well as embarrassing.

The good news is that problems became less with time. After a few months it happened much less, and then mostly first thing in the morning when I was reliably able to get to the toilet if necessary. I assume on those occasions it is triggered by changing from horizontal to vertical. It's quite rare now, two years later.
