Weight Loss Challenge

Posted 02 Feb 2025 at 15:03

Having had my last Prostap injection 10 months ago I’m getting increasingly depressed about the 12kg I gained in weight whilst on the poison. I haven’t been sedentary during the period by any means, nor have I been over indulgent any more than normal. I need to do something to get down from 103kg I am now, but am finding getting motivated difficult, especially at weekends😩
So, I’m going to challenge myself to post results on here for the next 4 weeks to see if I can achieve anything…even a little. I’ve set myself some targets:

Im going to use Herbalife products(my son is in the business big time). 1 good meal a day plus 2 shakes/meal bars and high protein snacks.
give up alcohol.
Get out on my ebike twice a week
walk as much as possible
Go to the gym twice a week.
Go swimming once a week

Im hoping the fact that I’m going public might help keep me motivated🤞🤞🤞

If anyone else fancies joining me in something similar feel free to join me on this post and we can compare results.

I’ll post my starting results tomorrow and then every Monday for the next 4 weeks.

For every Kg I lose I will donate £10 to PCUK and £10 to Maggies. To make it more of a challenge, if I put weight back on then lose it again, I will still donate £10. My target is to lose 10kg by the time I go my River Cruise in July💪💪💪

Can’t post a picture but my son uses these in his nutrition club and they are pretty accurate.

I had the same issue. I thought it would just vanish after the HT, but it didn't - it got worse - around 7½kg at the peak in my case. I was being a bit more careful with food and it started reducing very slowly about 18 months ago. About 6 months ago while doing an awareness event in a town centre, I grabbed a bite to eat from a market stall. That left me on the loo for a couple of days, but on the plus side, I'd lost weight, and I tried not to put that back on.

I made some changes. Don't eat unless hungry. Don't buy biscuits. Aim for 2 meals a day - breakfast (which is either All-bran or porridge), and a main meal. Main meal has a good protein content. This has made quite a difference and I've lost 5kg, mostly in the last 6 months. Another 2½kg would be nice, but if I stay where I am, which is just under BMI 25, I'll be happy.

I have been a lot more busy recently, and that also helps with avoiding snacking.

Wishing you all the best.

My son tells me high protein is key Andy, and  that’s what Herbalife is based on. I’ve used it before and it works, so I’m keen to see how it works in this situation.

Ive had a bit of a binge tonight so my results tomorrow might be a bit skewed…and costly🤣🤣🤣

Andy All bran is full of sugar and is a really bad choice for one of you daily meals.

Decho not so much high protein as low carb.

I peaked at 101kg currently running at 87kg. Did it relatively easily by cutting out breakfast AND avoiding bread, cereals, pasta, potatoes, root veg and puddings / sweeties.

Don't restrict anything else and the weight just dropped of and has stayed off even with lapses at weekends.

Can't join you yet Derek I'm on a cruise ship in the Caribbean then I'm off to Spain when we get home.

Wouldn't mind joining you in March as I'd really like to shed a stone when the weather starts to get a bit warmer.

francij1, you are right about the sugar content of All-bran. It's actually the unbranded versions I buy, in part because lower sugar, and in part because cheaper. When I make porridge, I add bran (and some sugar), and in both cases I add a small number of cranberries for the polyphenols.

Go on then Derek, I'll join you. The weight fell off me when I had surgery, probably far too much to be fair. They told me that you burn up to 5000 calories daily as your body recovers from the beating it has had. I took that to mean I should eat more. Unfortunately, when the calorie burning stopped, the crap eating habits didn't.

I weighed in at 12.5 stone today, and want to get back to 11.5. The extra weight I am carrying is as expected, just round my belly, which is not good. It apparently doesn't help with the incontinence issue either!

Consider the challenge on 👍

Ian.

I’ve been on hormone therapy for three years and it made me fat, (are you allowed to at least call yourself fat?). My specialist nurse told me that I would really struggle to lose weight whilst on hormones but I couldn’t stand the sight of myself in the mirror anymore, so I went on the 4/3 diet and lost two stone in seven months.

I’m not having another hormone injection in March when it’s due because my Oncologist wants to see if the cancer has just been suppressed or has gone for now at least.

If anyone is interested in what I ate on my diet, then by all means PM me.

The advantage of this diet, is that it doesn’t get in the way of the weekend’s Chinese and wine intake.

Ha, your BMI isn't as high as I thought at 103kg and BMI 28.   You must be quite tall.  I lost 7kg and my wife lost 5kg during lockdown.    Ban all biscuits, cakes, chocolates from the house and firmly limit any you eat outside.   Check for low saturated fat, 20g a day max, and to some degree sugar.  Walk every day.  Limit alcohol to 4 pints of beer or one bottle of wine a week.   Beware hidden fat like pastries and pies, croissants almost all fat.  Eat home made food mainly veg.  Use low saturated fat cooking oil like sunflower, rape or olive oil, and Yeo half butter spread.    Don't eat anything between 7pm and 8am.  Be a miserable swine.

I went from 85 to 78kg in about 3 months and have stayed there, BMI around 24.

It's a bit like stopping smoking, after a while seeing people piling on the butter or having a big cream cake looks a mixture of incredible, amusing, alarming and worse.

Yes, I’m tall…6ft 3inches but my high BMI and Visceral fat still bother me.

I won’t be eating any crap except maybe for the odd scone if we’re out somewhere…after all you need the occasional treat and I’ll compensate for that. As I said I am going with the Herbalife Regime. My son runs a Nutrition club and they get great results from people who stick to it…and it’s not really hard. The shakes are nice, they do flavoured ones but I find them a bit synthetic so I use Vinilla mixed with frozen berries. I’ve just devoured a packet of BBQ flavoured Protein chips which are very tasty and having normal chicken curry for tea.😊 If I’m out on my ebike for lunch I can have a ‘meal bar’ which are also tasty, along with lemon, almond chocolate bars for a snack.

my problem in the past is going wild at weekends and undoing all the good work during the week…but I can’t go on like that or I’m never going to succeed. I really want to see if this works because if I go on another cruise without losing it I will be like a beached whale when I come back!😩

How do you find out all those stats? Some are obvious but what about:

Muscle mass/quality. Bone mass. Visceral fat. BMR. Body water.

I'd be interested to know the ideal and measure the actual if pos please Derek

Cheers

Bill

That’s brilliant all you guys working at losing the weight. I lost 1 3/4 stone after my 7th Chemo as i was so ill and had the metal mouth and couldn’t eat anything. But when i stopped the chemo and my consultant put me back on the steroids i just piled it all back on. Mine is mainly belly and a massive moon face. I can’t wear most of my shirts anymore and have to stick to T shirts or Polo shirts. I haven’t got the energy for any reasonable walks and as im having the odd fall im a bit worried about going out on my own now.

I did gain a real chocolate and biscuit craving on the steroids initially but i seem to have come out of that but its made no difference to my weight since then.

Good luck guys

Phil

Hi lads.

I respect your attempts at losing weight and wish you well. 0 I joined Bet365 and lost over twenty pounds  on the first day.

I spent alot of time in my forties dieting and keeping fit. Now I'm 68 years old I can't be arsed. My clothes still fit me and I haven't set foot on any scales for years.

As I have a heart problems, on top of the prostate condition, I suppose I should try and eat healthier and lose about a stone. However since diagnosis I've decided to enjoy what I enjoy. If that includes drinking a wee bit excessively and having too many 'life reducing' foods, sobeit. 🙂

You’ve REALLY GOT to want to do it Adrian if it’s to succeed, and we have so much to deal with when diagnosed with PCa that I can understand why anyone just doesn’t have the desire to do so. I’ve not had the motivation to do anything about it until now, but I’ve got a window of 6 weeks before I go back to Fuerteventura (thanks to Brexshit!) that I really do NOW have that motivation.  My wife has always said losing it is the easy part, it’s keeping it off which is more difficult!

As well as feeling fat and not liking it, None of my shirts, shorts and trousers fit anymore…and this is the second lot I’ve bought since starting HT. indeed I could just go out and buy yet another wardrobe for my July cruise…but I’m running out of sizes😱

And there is another reason…always at the back of my mind is the fact that now that my testosterone is coming back, I just have this niggling fear that my PSA will start to rise about the acceptable level, which means I could be on HT for life…and I want to be in the best possible physical state if that happens.

And finally I know how good I feel when I have lost weight in the past.

Im not going to be a bore about it though and will still have treats…and I’m not giving up my coffee! 6 weeks is not that long in my life so let’s just wait and see what I can achieve.

Hi Derek.

I agree mate  it's all about 'you've got to want to do it.' When I was about 53 years old, I'd ballooned to almost 16 stone. I lost 3 stone in a year. Like wise about the same time, I cut out alcohol. Didn't have a drop for 7 years!

I achieved both goals due to and my strong will power. Now, I'm in my twilight years, I've decided I'm not giving into my will power anymore. 😁

Hang on Adrian, you're the same vintage as me, 56 was a good year😊 I don’t consider myself to be in my twilight years…unless of course this f….ng disease gets me! I remember though when MY parents were 68 I thought they were ancient🤣🤣🤣

If I can achieve this it might give some encouragement to other guys who have to through ADT.

I am a 56 baby too , just coming to the end of HT , I have lost 7lbs recently by fasting , I don't eat after 19:30 and not before 9:30 .

I do like a decent beer and usually have one each night , would lose more if I cut that out .

Well done Mike👏👏👏Keep us posted on progress.
We’re having friends round on Saturday night so will be having one or two malt whiskies. Will try and keep off the wine this weekend though!
