Bladder control during the treatment

Half way through 20 sessions of salvage RT for recurrence. Had a prostatectomy in 2020. Side effects of frequency and urgency have kicked in and I’m struggling to get through each treatment. Drinking and waiting for 30 minutes means that once I get on the ‘sun bed’ all I can do is think about having to pee! Any hints and tips would be much appreciated.

If you are struggling speak to the staff, they have seen it all before. You may be able to cut the drink to zap time down with their approval. If you are still wearing underwear, a pad in your pants may give you some reassurance. They will no doubt allow you to use a urine bottle in the treatment room in an emergency. Talk to the staff, don't make any changes without speaking to them ,you could risk permanent bladder damage.

Thanks Chris

Hi Dave,

it only happened to me once on the ‘sunbed’ and the staff were ready with a pee bottle for me which they handed to me before I was lowered….we had a good laugh about it.  The staff are use to seeing and dealing with this all the time😊
I agree with Chris about the pad..latterly I wore one.

i found that during the 30 mins wait, if I kept my mind active it stopped me thinking about my bladder. I wrote a poem about my journey or played solitaire on my phone…or just chatted to the others in the waiting room.

good luck for the rest of your treatment.
