Blood in pee 2 years post RT

So, had RT about 2 years ago. All has gone well apart from a flareup of urinary sympyoms last summer which eased back by winter.

Today, after taking 50mg Viagra tablet and sex (didn't orgasm), I had blood in my pee. First time since immediately after the RT (and have only used Viagra a handful of times in that period). Slightly worried...

Due to see my oncologist for regular 6-monthly checkup in 10 days, but wondering if I should phone my GP now.

Any thoughts?

Thanks everybody.

Hi Bill.

It appears that it is unlikely to be anything serious but should be checked pretty pronto.

I would start by going to GP to get a urine test to check for a UTI. They will normally do this same day.

GP will probably refer on the urgent cancer pathway because blood in urine can be cancer and that needs to be ruled out. In your case, it's more likely to be radiation cystitis (radiation burn), but they will still check for bladder and kidney cancer. Radiotherapy can cause the formation of fine fragile blood vessels during the healing process, which are liable to break.

Just over 4 years after RT, I started passing blood. It has happened occasionally for a few days each time, starting next time I pee'd after sex. More specifically, in my case the blood was actually just after I pee'd and not in the bulk of the urine. This indicated it's coming from the prostate. (Same if it's only when you start peeing, but not in the bulk of the urine.) Once they'd checked my bladder and kidneys were OK, panic over. They didn't care about a bleeding prostate after radiotherapy, given my PSA is still looking good. (I can't think there's anything much they could do about it anyway.)

You can also get radiation cystitis in the bladder, and/or in the urethra. It can also happen in the rectum, but that's called radiation proctitis.

It's happened a hand full of times now. Blood shows for 1-3 days.

Thank you so much, Andy. Blood appeared at the start of the first pee after sex. Still some pinkish pee on occasion today.  Sounds similar to you.

Been to GP today and, as you suggested, urine sample taken to check for infection. Also, I've to ask that kidney function be tested when blood taken for PSA check next week.  These results will determine next step...

Curious, Andy, how long do you see blood when you have an episode? I've had more today - so that's 6 straight days. (Occasionally blood present either at the start of peeing or when I'm pushing at the end). Cheers, Billy.

Thank you. I was surprised to see blood again today, being day 6. But I guess we're all different and I'll just have to keep folllowing the process...
