Biopsy Today

I’m 72 years old and I’m very, very worried about having a biopsy at 2.30pm today.
I’ve first became bothered about having a PSA test in 2004. I had a DRE conducted by my GP who announced, ‘we’ve got a slighted enlarged one here’

I’ve always been concerned since that date about my prostate. I was concerned about back pain in 2018 and was sent for an MRI scan which found I had L2/l3 and L4/l5 disc bulge/herniation.
I was referred to a Urologist in early 2021. I had cystoscopy, ultrasound on my bladder, flow test. At that time my PSA was 2.1. I was prescribed tamsulosin and discharged.
2 years on I was referred to the same urologist when my PSA was 3.7. I had a lumbar spine and prostate MRI. The pirads result was 2. This was March 2023.
I had regular PSA test which latterly started to rise culminating recently in a PSA level of 7.1. I have been referred for an MRI scan which has resulted in me called in for a biopsy at 2.30pm today.
I have recently been experiencing low back pain, testicular pain and other aches and pains all over.
I’m assuming this is serious and I’m petrified that I have cancer and it’s spread.

Thanks Derek,

Just back from having the biopsy. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. The MRI scan showed a grey shadow described by the advanced nurse practitioner as a tiny shadow measuring 6mm. The worst part was the needle in either side of the prostate. I’m back a week Friday for the results.  The shadow looked larger on screen but a couple of times described by the nurse as tiny.

Hi Vic,

I’m sorry I haven’t been on here to wish you good luck for your bioposy…I’ve just been so busy today.

I hope the biopsy went ok and you didn’t have any pain…I certainly didn’t, more like a discomfort….and a little embarrassment but the nurses were fabulous.

I’m sure your home by now so just take it easy for a couple of days.

all the best for the results.

Hi Vic,

6mm is indeed tiny. My tumor was exactly 3 times larger. I had RARP back in August and am currently undetectable.

I wish you the best of luck with your biopsy results. But if they do come back positive, at least know that it's been caught very early and you should do well with treatment.

One post biopsy side effect you should be aware of is that you likely will have a lot of blood in your semen for a few weeks. For me, my semen looked like pure blood. It was freaky looking, but is apparently normal and despite the way it looked, there wasn't any pain. Just an FYI...

Hi Vic

I had a month of worry over Christmas & New Year between a raised PSA and biopsy results despite having a PSA just under 5 and every twinge in my back, groin, shoulder etc was like a signal that there was something going on. Of course the reality is we all get these twinges all the time and it's just our minds running away with itself. Clarkson used to say that one wasn't old enough for a Jaguar until you make that noise that men of a certain age do when the sit down, its just now when you make that noise you're worrying that's its more than just being a bit creeky. You'll get your biopsy result and from what you've said so far it's likely to be low to intermediate risk cancer (like mine) and you'll do your research and make a plan. I'm heading for surgery despite being told I can go on AS as I want it gone rather than lurking.

Good luck & try to keep positive.

Cheers, Adam
