Told today I have prostate cancer but what type

Just got the results from the MRI today and out of the blue, they told me I have prostate cancer and its also in my lymph and in the bone - he asked if my right hip had been hurting. Been reading up a bit this afternoon. I'm guessing that's Stage 4 cancer? I get my biopsy next Friday and they hope to do a CRT scan next week as well. I had the MRI on Saturday and this meeting today so they are moving very quickly on it, so I think it might be rather serious then?

Feeling for you - you might want to join one of the local support groups in your area - good moral support and useful advice

Hi Al,

Sorry you find yourself ‘in the club’ but hopefully by joining this forum we can offer you some support and advice.
No point in kidding you by saying it’s not serious, but many men on here are Stage 4 and have been around for many, many years. I’m not sure whether I’ve picked this up wrong, but your last sentence suggests to me that you are dealing with it ok? If so that’s a good start.

sounds like they are onto your case in a timely manner, which is good, and hopefully a treatment plan will be in place soon.

i wish you all the best on your journey.

Sorry to hear you are in this situation. It is unusual for a definitive diagnosis to be made prior to a biopsy. If you don’t mind me asking what was your PSA which led to the MPMRI. Have you been experiencing symptoms?

The biopsy will provide further details and some form of treatment will likely start as soon as they are in receipt of those findings.

They just told me the previous 2 PSA's were raised, they didn't say how much. The Dr said the biopsy was really just a confirmation as they could see the cancer from the MRI, they are starting me on the hormone treatment straight after the biopsy next week, the biopsy is in the morning and the nurse is picking up the pills from the pharmacy to give me after the biopsy is done.

Hi Al

I'm sorry to read your news, but it's good that things are being actioned for you in a very timely manner. I hope you don't mind me asking, but did you have any symptoms that led you to having a PSA or was this a routine checkup?

I assume you've got someone with you when you go for your appointments? Things often become a blur at appointments, as there can be so much to take in, so I would always recommend someone being with you to take notes or to ask extra questions. There are many amazing guys on here in a similar situation to yourself who will be able to give realtime advice and offer continued support throughout your treatment.

Please keep us updated on your biopsy diagnosis, as and when you can.

I'm sure you already have questions, but these are good to ask:

What type of hormone therapy are you offering me and why?

Are there other treatments I can have?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of my treatment?

What treatments and support are available to help manage side effects?

Are there any lifestyle changes that might help me manage my cancer, symptoms, or side effects?

How often will I have check-ups and what will this involve?

How will we know if my cancer starts to grow again?

What other treatments are available if that happens?

Can I join any clinical trials?

If I have any questions or get any new symptoms, who should I contact?

Wishing you all the best.

Seb,

Thats fantastic mate, just the sort of advice I needed. They've just rung up and offered me a CT scan on Sunday :-) So they really are moving fast which is reassuring. MRI last Saturday, meeting to discuss results on Thursday, CT scan Sunday, Biopsy next Friday.

It's also my birthday tomorrow (Saturday) so I do have a strong temptation to do a variation on the old I got drunk joke:

"hey, guess what I got for my birthday.....

I got cancer"

:-)

All great advice above, and yes, have a decent drink on your birthday!

It's great that they're moving quickly, all the very best to you.

Update:

So went for a biopsy, CT, bone density and all that stuff, started hormone therapy 2 weeks ago and I'll be starting chemo on the 13th May - so the NHS have moved really quickly.

Have told my family now so they all know.

Now time to look forward to the chemo, so bought myself a nice cruiser motorbike :-)
