Had surgery today what next

Hi Gary,

If it only extends to the edge I don't think it will have any effect on your staging.

I was diagnosed as T2 prior to surgery and told the cancer was contained. Unfortunately when they took the prostate out it had broken through and I was then told I am T3a and I had positive margins.

Hopefully the chat with the nurse will provide more clarity and hopefully put your mind at rest.

All the best,

Mel

Its a shame they couldn't they even give you a cancer staging. I'd ask for a copy of the post op histology report, mate. Although it probably makes no difference, it would be nice to know your results, instead of you having to wait for over a month for them. I often had to be politely assertive to get results.

Hi Adrian thanks for the reply I’ll request this from them when I speak with my nurse. Generally with what I’ve been told in your opinion do you think I’ll need more treatment? I’ve been very calm since diagnosis but with news I’m now terrified that it’s spread.
thanks

Hi Gary,

I'm not medically trained, mate. However, your post histology results including cancer staging, Gleason score and whether you had positive or negative margins which are some of the factors that can affect the risk of needing further treatment. Perhaps more significantly, you will get a post op PSA check, mine was about 2 months after surgery, which will give a clear indication of how successful the prostatectomy was. I was T3a at the time of my op. The post op histology confirmed there had been capsular breach and my Gleason score was upped to 9 (4+5) but I was fortunate to have negative margins. That was over 2 years ago, as yet my PSA has remained undetectable and there is no sign of spread. There are no guarantees in this game, mate. There are blokes on here, who've had a much better cancer staging and Gleason score than me, but have unfortunately later needed further treatment. Even though I've been 'cancer free' for two years, this doesn't eliminate the risk of recurrence and the need for salvage treatment. Nonograms suggest I still have a 50/50 chance of BCR. Hopefully your op will have been a complete success, nothing you've said so far suggests otherwise, and you'll not need any further treatment. Please keep us updated and best of luck, mate. 👍

Thanks again for the reply’s I’ve spoke to my specialist cancer nurse at the hospital, she gave me a bit more information and calmed me even said the letter was poorly worded and should have had more information on it.
There’s no change in my Gleason, grading or staging to what I was told pre op they’ve all came back the same only problem they’ve found was that in one section there was a area less than 3mm that had positive margin. Psa and appointment with consultant booked for early June so we’ll see what happens, until then keep calm and carry on.
Thanks again. X

Got my full staging today along with pathology report from hospital they seem pretty confident all will be well and booked me in for June 10th for PSA test.
My pathology was

3&4=7

grade 2

stage pT2cNX

positive margin 1 <3mm apical left side intraprostatic

Gleason grade 3 at margin

not really sure what it all means but my CNS didn’t seem overly concerned

thanks again folks
