Catheter out today after RALP

Hello Everyone,

My husband has had his catheter removed today 9 days post his RALP operation. He is doing ok but obviously feeling quite vulnerable and leaking quite a bit especially when he stands up and it is leaking through the pads. Just wondering what pads are the best to use at the beginning and whether pull up pants are better than pads. I don’t think he could go out any where at the moment which is depressing for him.

Any advice gratefully received.

Thank you.

Hi

I used Tena Level 3 and Abena Level 3 for the first few weeks, changing 4-5 times per day. I was also leaking lots when standing/walking which is hard but these did the job. I tried to go to the loo a couple of times before going out for a walk to empty the bladder as much as possible and went with a fresh pad, I would leak all the way on a 15/20 min walk but they held up ok. It is demoralising at the beginning but it does improve, he can start doing some light squeezes and over time he will need less pads. I’m 3 months post op now and just use one level 1 pad per day for the odd leak. I’ve also been prescribed some medication which has also helped to get to an almost dry position. All the best

Hi

I am 3 weeks from having my catheter out and have bought Tena 1/2/3. I tried others but these seem the most comfortable and reliable for me. I am the same leaking wise and it's a flood when I walk but now I am just getting on with it. After 40 mins walking the Tena 3 feels heavy with urine so I'll stop and change it. This last week I've started going out to cafes/ shops and meeting friends. If I am not having to walk a long distance I'll use the tena 2 and that has been fine for sitting in a cafe and leaking when I stand up. The tena 1 I'll use in the house or short trips out. Over the 3 weeks I haven't seen a massive improvement as yet but I can sometimes go without a pad at home in the morning for a couple of hours.

Hoping it'll improve sometime. I had to push myself to go out but only went out twice the first 2 weeks and then forced myself to get out thus last week and it's been good for my head. It's not always comfy to sit with a pad but after a while you forget it's there. He needs to be patient with himself and get out when he feels ok enough. I'm 54 and love biking/running/hiking but have now realised that this is a very gradual process to improvement.....

Good luck to you both and look forward to better days ahead,

Mike
