Hi all.  I have received my results today and it’s gleeson 3+4 with it contained in the TZ left hand zone   I am due to have a bone scan next( is this normal) and then I need to make a decision on what treatment to go with.   While it’s shock I was expecting it and need to weigh up my options now.  I received a large booklet of leaflets which will make good bed time reading.  The whole appointment took about 25  mins with the consultant and it is a bit of a blur some of it although my missus has filled it parts I missed   I then talked to a specialist nurse for about 30 mins     Cheers

The bone scan is probably just precautionary given your PSA Simon. Once you've decided on treatment and got a plan in place, you'll start to feel better about the whole thing. I was also G3+4=7. I had surgery last July, and 9 months later I have undetectable PSA and am doing fine. You'll be ok mate. Ask lot's of questions on here, as you'll get a lot of great advice, and keep us posted.

Things can be done somewhat differently depending how a particular hospiital works and how the MDT considers the case and other factors of a specific case, also how much further information a patient wishes. Wanting to see a surgeon so a patient can ask pertinent questions like his/her experience and success rate, whether s/he is confident all cancer can be removed and whether both nerve bundles or one can be saved etc. I don't know whether your seeing a scan helps beyond what you are told unless you are highly experienced in interpreting scans or you propose to send this to another specialist for a second opinion. (In my own case different hospitals took a different view on my scans). Having the opportunity to discuss various forms of radiotherapy for your specific case with an Oncologist could also be helpful. I would tend to leave these appointments until you have had the bone scan as in the very unlikely finding of bone mets this could influence treatment.

Providing youngish men like you are healthy and there are no contraindications MDT's mostly reccommend surgery over RT. The main reason for this is that cancer might recurr even in a radiated Prostate some time in the future, a younger man having a longer life expectancy and therefore a longer risk.

Carefully consider both types of treatment and relative potential side effects before finalising your choice.

I was diagnosed about a month ago mate also 3+4 =7 and contained, strange though as after reading on here many people having bone/ pet scans I asked the urologist why I wasn’t given one and he advised me that they don’t offer it unless it is 4+3 =7 , I have an appointment tomorrow with urologist who was part of the MDT meeting so will be asking the question again

Good luck with it mate

Cheers

Nick

Ok thanks.  I was told it hasnt spread to lymph nodes and the bone scan is just to make sure. My psa was 22 so I think this is why.  It’s just another thing to stress about !!   Cheers

Your right you have past a threshold to trigger a bone scan. They are just following protocol. Another way of looking at it is at least they are checking. I had an additional scan because they could see some fluid between my organs, again more stress but came to nothing. It's a tough time when going through the diagnosis stage. Once you get a treatment plan in place then it helps.

Hi again Simon.

As others have said your bone scan is just precautionary. Reading through your past posts, am I right in thinking that your PSA has risen from 19 to 22 in the last few weeks. Has there been any indication that you may have other prostate conditions such as prostatitis or an enlarged prostate.

Consultations can be confusing and I always asked for copies of scan and biopsy results. That way, I was always clear about my  condition. Did they indicate if you had just one lesion or more and how safely, it or they, were, contained with in the prostate?

Try not to worry mate. On my cancer journey I've come to realise that worrying only spoils today and doesn't affect what happens tomorrow. You'll be okay. 👍

Thanks all My psa was 19 using a home test.  Since I’ve had tests at hospital and it actually went down from 23 to 22 I was expecting the news yesterday but went into a tail spin when a bone scan was mentioned even though the consultant and the urology nurse said it was unlikely but it’s just a precaution they have to take.   I’ve got one lesion contained in the left upper part of the TZ zone and was told there was no lymph node spread which sort of cheered me up.  Gleason 3+4      Cheers for your replies.  I do  feel more positive after reading  this morning.    Cheers

Hi

Gleason 3+4.

Following my biopsy I have only met with the specialist Nurse. I was given four booklets for the options available to me - RP,Brachytherapy, RT and HT. RP was recommended. Calls days later with Nurse - I was looking at RP and also asked for consultation with RT team. I have now been referred to the Surgical team and the RT team (at the hospital) to meet with them for further questions I may have.  Still waiting for appointments dates.

Is this the usual process? I will like to speak to the Urologist that performed the biopsy - I want see copies of my MRI scan and biopsy, and also ask questions. I have not met with any other member of the MDT team since biopsy.

Thank you Barry.

I am waiting for the appointments to ask the surgeon and oncologist various questions but I am not sure if a scan will be offered to me - cancer is localised. I will like to have a scan ahead of any final decision as to the course of treatment.

Thanks for the video. Does NHS offer Retzius sparing RP?
