Raised PSA home test

Hi everyone,

So I’m 47, father of three. After finding out my uncle has been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer I thought it prudent to get tested. With the issue of getting a GP appointment I decided to get a test kit from Amazon which  came back positive. I did a virtual appointment with my GP who has booked me a PSA test for this coming Tuesday morning.

I have to say, when I got the positive test I just shrugged it off and booked the appointment but now it’s getting closer it’s feeling very real and the “what if’s” are creeping in.

one questions I wanted to ask is, realistically how long does it take to get the test results back in your experiences.

A psa test by your GP shouldn't take long to come back. Just like any blood test you should find out within a week or so.

There are a few things you should make sure of before you go for the test, otherwise you might have a raised psa level that's not related to prostate problems.

My doctor told me not to ejaculate for a couple of days before the test as that can raise psa levels. Likewise no strenuous exercise or cycling two days before a test. And make sure you don't have a UTI infection or the results are void.

Its normal to worry but at this stage there really is nothing to worry about. Its just a blood test and nothing more.

Most likely the home test was inaccurate and you have no issues to worry about.

It is possible to see test results online from your GP. If like most middle aged men you hardly ever interact with the health service, you may not have signed up for this service yet, it is reasonably easy to do. You can usually get your test results online within a couple of days, relying on phone calls can take a lot longer.

Getting the ball rolling on PSA testing at a young age is worth doing, hopefully with a clear result.

Please keep us informed as the next person who comes along in your position, will want to know how you got on.
