PSA levels post op

Hi, I had a prostatectomy 6 weeks ago and am due a PSA blood test shortly. How long post op does it take for the PSA levels to "disappear" from the blood?

Should I expect some residue after 6 weeks?

i.e. if the op has been successful how soon should the PSA levels have gone to zero?

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Tony

I think I was 6 weeks post op when I had mine tested, and it was undetectable. Hopefully yours will be the same.

All the best.

Mine was about two months post op. By the time you've had your first post op PSA check they should think that everything has settled down and ideally your PSA should be undetectable.Good luck mate.

👍

My surgeon said  in the post op meeting that the operation was a success if PSA results came back undetectable. Interesting I was shown to have a 3mm positive margin. He strongly suggested that this was likely caused by damage to the prostate during removal and was confident it would come to nothing because the PSA results were undetectable. After 2 years of being undetectable I guess he might have been right.

PSA has a half life in the blood of 2-3 days. After 30 days the PSA will be one thousand what it was before the op. So six weeks should be ample to clear out all the PSA, other organs do produce PSA so some people have a PSA of about 0.02 post op, but ideally you will have a < sign which means your PSA is undetectable.
