Weight increase after surgery

I had RP surgery on 3rd March which apparently has been a success. About a month before surgery, I was given a 28 day course of Bicalutamide followed by a single injection of Prostap around 2 weeks before surgery. Since the injection, I have not had any hormone therapy.

Very soon after the surgery, I noticed my weight had gone up 2 kgs and my waist size increased by 4 cm - I have had a stable weight and waist size for 20 years. On discussing this with my surgeon, his reaction was a light hearted 'nothing to do with me, mate'.

I am now experiencing hot flushes which are a known side effect of hormone therapy but as it is now over 3 months since my last hormone treatment, will my weight go back down or will I have to buy a larger size of trousers? My diet is unchanged and I have resumed regular cycling on hilly terrain.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Steve.

I was also on bical for a couple of months before surgery and just managed to avoid a scheduled Prostap injection. I think any HT fattens you up. 🙂

Post surgery, I've put on a few pounds but that's probably due to the extra ale I've been supping to self medicate. My belly was definitely inflated after surgery and has never recovered to the six pack it once was. 🙄 Joking apart, mate, I believe surgery can affect the muscles around your waist. I also believe it makes you more likely to suffer from abdominal hernias, I'm pretty sure I've now got one, I'll have to get it checked out.

I hope that whatever has increased your weight and waist line is only temporary and you don't need new trousers. I had to get some.

Best of luck.👍

Hi Adrian

Many thanks for your reply, it was much appreciated.

I was just wondering how long the side effects of HT last or if they are permanent.

I am sorry to hear you may have a hernia, I hope it does not mean another op!

My wife has been very strict about me not lifting which I think has saved me!

I was told that HT would make me depressed, give me hot flushes and make me fat - my daughter-in-law said 'welcome to the club'.

Wishing you all the best and keep supping the ale.

Steve

PS I have ordered larger trousers.

Hi again Steve I had sore 'nips' for about 3 months. But I'm not sure if that was the HT or the wife twisting them when I snored. 🙂

Serious comment excess weight and cancer are natural bed fellows. Lose it if you can, it can only do you good, assuming you don't have an undiagnosed eating disorder!
