Apalutamide no longer working and now chemotherapy delayed.

Hi,

My dad was diagnosed with advance stage 4 prostate Ca and eventually decided on Apalutamide back in October which appeared to be working well but the last 3 PSA tests have now shown a fast increase last 2 were 44 then 79 within a few weeks. We were told that it's now docetaxel time and after weeks of waiting, further scans, bloods and a full hospital day, the day prior - speaking with consultants, pharmacist and counselling from the chemo nurses we were informed after a last minute xray that it needed to be postponed until after he has seen the ortho team due to worries about the amount in his thigh. They say now he may have to have surgery prior as they are worried the chemo could cause a femur fracture.

The ortho team apparently only see patients on a Friday which came and went without them contacting us, so chemo will now be delayed by 2 weeks if he doesn't need the surgery, and if he does he can't start until healed which I know would be about 6 weeks minimum!

He's always been so active and walks daily so being told he can no longer do this has hit hard, especially after mentally preparing to start the chemo being back in limbo and on no treatment is really bringing us down.

Our CNS team is great but we see a different consultant everytime and they really don't seem to be in any rush to get things sorted. I'm so worried with the rate the PSA is increasing and the last bone scan showed further spread...

Has anyone had a similar experience? Or had to undergo surgery prior to chemo?

Thanks for taking the time to read 😊

I would make some noise.

Push the CNS's, but I would also contact the orthopedic department about the urgent appointment you are waiting for before starting urgent chemo.
