Fatigue after RT

Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the post but just wondering if anyone had experienced fatigue similar to what I am currently going through. I generally find this forum to be the friendliest and best place for some reassurance 🙂. I had HDR brachytherapy in Jan and EBRT that finished end of Feb. I’m also on 2 years of HT which started in October. I would say I’ve tolerated everything very well up to this point but the last 5 weeks I’ve been shattered with some very low moods (I know the HT doesn’t help here 😔). But with the fatigue, I was expecting the worst to be at the latter end  of the RT and up to 6-8 weeks after and currently cannot work due to this. Worry this may be HT related but strange how I’ve been fine for 7 months and thought I may have been through the worst. Just wondering if anyone has been in a similar boat. Thanks in advance.

Stuart

Yes, I had 3 yrs of Zoladex plus 2 yrs abiraterone, enzalutimide, prednisolone on trial with 32 sessions of RT. The RT was fairly straightforward accepting some issues with bladder, bowel a bit of extra tiredness. I suffered many effects from the HT but expected them. Tiredness, fatigue, muscle/bone aches, weakness, hot flushes,, depression etc etc. For the mood swings/depression (i would just start crying for no obv reason when, walkinv, driving, showering, windsurfing (not too much obv), watching tv etc etc)i got antidepressants from gp and they really helped. If hot flushes really affect you try acupuncture that really helped me-ask at Maggies/Macmillan.

Fatigue very commmon whilst on HT. Some people experience hot flushes and change in personality among various side effects and to varying degrees. I just got the fatigue for the 8 months I was on HT but also lack of libido

Hi Stuart,

I've had similar treatment to you, EBRT end of Nov 24 - beginning Dec 24, then HDR brachytherapy just before Christmas, I found this generally not too bad. On HT for 2 years which will finish July 2026.

I'm much more tired than I used to be, though not to the point it's stopped me working, I'd put this down to the HT. I did think symptoms for this had plateaued after the first 6 months, but recently hot flushes have got more frequent and intense.

Maybe other HT side effects can worsen over time too? I've tried to keep up with exercise to try and combat the fatigue, I think it helps as I find when I'm active I can keep going, its when I stop and sit down that it hits me.

Thank you both so much ☺️. I was kind of hoping it would be more down to the RT than the HT as on that till at least Oct 26 but maybe not. A month ago I was hiking up Ingleborough with no issues and regularly walking 6-10 miles. I was regularly going to the gym/swimming. 4 weeks later and struggling to get out of bed. My wife has been telling me to slow down for months and it scares me to think she was right 🤦‍♂️The only way I can describe it is like jet-lag, but not being able to sleep. John, Thinking about it, the hot flushes have got worse for me too, and again I thought had plateaued, however seem quite mild compared to what I’ve read for some people and tbh they got worse when I started on daily 5 mg Tadalafil. I think you’re right though, since I’ve slowed down this has come on. And thanks for the advice as you’ve always been one step ahead of me on this journey.

Thank you again

Stuart

Thanks Peter,

That helps a lot. Really appreciate it. It looks more and more it’s the HT, just don’t understand why it’s took 8 months. I’ve not been too bad with them but good to know acupuncture can help. Thanks so much.
